Hello! This is my Roleplaying guide based on my time on paradise combined with a lot of tabletop roleplaying experience. I hope it can give some interesting ideas. If it doesn't, I'm still happy you took the time to check it out. This guide doesn't dwell a lot on what you SHOULD do but rather HOW you do it. It's easy to tell someone to roleplay. It's harder to tell someone how to roleplay. This guide tries to amend this by providing traditional roleplaying and improv techniques. It also gives a lot of examples on how you could accomplish the three steps detailed below. The guide in 4 words: Build, do not destroy. The three things that make you a good roleplayer in this game are the following, in order of priority: Create interesting situations Be Interested Be Interesting Creating interesting situations Difficulty: Hard Note: As always, any interesting situations you create should follow the servers rules. The hardest, but also the most interesting part. It's hard to define an interesting situation but it's something that involves player characters somehow interacting with something. The classic example is an antagonist trying to kill you. It is immediately interesting because it's your character being hunted by a threat. You wanting to survive versus the antagonist wanting to take you down. However, interesting situations can be bigger than this. The bartender can throw a date night for the lonely hearts, the librarian could have a poetry competition, a civilian could try to get a permit to build something in the maints. The possibilities are endless, it just requires imagination. They also require initiative and work. Creating something means you have to try and risking failure. This is, combined witht he imagination required to come up with interesting ideas, is what makes this the hardest thing in this guide. Push yourself and go for it. Examples of creating interesting situations Here are some suggestions for different jobs to initiate interesting situations. Note: This skill depends heavily on the round and whats going on. If you're currently to busy doing your job to initiate interesting situations, do your duties first, then start getting creative. If you got skills, you might be able to do both. Captain: HOP: Sec Officer: Detective: Therapist: Civilian: Be interested Difficulty: Easy Be interested in other characters. Ask them about stuff. Ask them about their backgrounds and whatever else comes to mind. This is appreciated by everyone who has made a Character. They want people to know about their character. Let them show it off. By being interested, you can also show off your character. I've heard SS13 being called a "glorified chatroom" and it struck quite a cord with me. Talk to people. Ask them about their day. Being able to smalltalk as a made up character is a pretty high level of roleplay. The 4 techniques used to be interested are: "I heard a rumour" Yes/Yes And/ Yes But Have an excuse to start a conversation Join in on the action "I heard a rumour" One of the easiest and best conversation techniques to use in this game. As long its harmless, you can make stuff up about OTHER player characters like rumours or facts. Bonus points if you make this flattering or interesting tailored to their personality. They could play along using yes/yes and/ yes but or just say you're totally wrong. Either way, they get a chance to small talk about a possible previous event. Maybe even add something to their backstory. Try it. Examples About a Badass: About a Captain: About a Detective: About a Quartermaster About a Clown: About a Mime: Fill in the blank examples: Yes/ Yes and/ Yes But: This is a classic Improv technique. Someone comes to you for something. Clown wants all access, the chaplain wants to bless you, Sec wants to arrest you, Captain wants you for a special mission. In most cases, you should avoid saying no (Unless you really don't want to do it). It's better to say Yes/Yes and/ Yes but. All these answers will lead to MORE roleplaying and MORE interactions. A No will in most cases lead to less roleplaying. However, you should obviously still follow the server rules and apply common sense to the situations. Examples below. HOP example: Chaplain Blessing you example: Sec Arresting you example: Captain wants you example: Have an excuse to start an interaction When you make your character, consider how they interact with certain people. Different people want different things out of an interaction. What would your character be interested in finding out? Some are focused on the job/personal life/love life/interests. More detail on how to create excuses for your character is in the character creator in the next post. Examples, based on types that can be found on the station.: The young CentCom goldenboy/girl The Gossipy Grandmother The Naive Newcomer The Flirt The Badass The Preacher Join in on the action If you see someone announcing something, like a private investigator, a fun religion or a scientific experiment being announced, interact with it in some way. Just stopping by is good but if you can contribute, taking it in a different direction or building upon what's already there, it's even better. Create interaction. By talking with someone, you can start a series of events that could make someones round a lot better. Don't be afraid to ask people for things or ask about things. Be Interesting Difficulty: Medium. To be interesting means you have a character people are curious about and want to interact with. Your character changes you from just your job to an actual person. This step also happens before you've actually started playing the game. In my next post I'll post a character creator, designed specifically for Paradise, to help you create an interesting character. Some shortcuts to be interesting are the following: Have a unique or odd style/appereance. Speak in a distinct manner. Off hand mentions to previous events in your life. If you came this far, thanks for reading. I truly hope it gave you one or two ideas!2 points

I did some cult concept art, I plan on doing concept art for most antag types and posting em here. Honestly speaking guys, I'm a bit dissatisfied with this one, feels like I could've really done a lot better, but this is what I've got The app I was using to draw kept on freezing for a good 5 seconds every so often, probably like a good 30 seconds between each freeze, and it was so annoying, I feel like that really played a part in my work lacking on this drawing.2 points

Hmm, Y'all got a lot of good ideas and points you've made through out this thread. I do have to agree the vox discord has been a bit of an echo chamber. (it's not a serious issue though as we've only had one echo chamber moment and quite a few of us realized it the second we got into it. We generally just all like to discuss vox stuff and joke about IC stuff. We aren't sitting around trying to make up the best way to play vox, and we're also working on trying to straighten out lore so we can more easily rp and put the effort in to make our characters unique on their own.) I like the sound of either cold resistance or maybe even pressure resistance for vox to make short spacewalks viable in case of emergency (like medbay getting bombed for the fourteenth time today). A lot of complaints I am hearing from vox players is less actually how SR works or how revival works, and more so how the brute malus functions. Simply put, I don't think me throwing a bottle at the bar and accidentally hitting a vox should give them IB and a broken chest. It doesn't really make sense IC and it's not super fun gameplay wise to have to get three separate surgeries done because your sec vox decided they wanted to stop a simple giant spider mob from killing someone and breaking shit. Maybe if there was a better way to include vox being small, not the type to fight, people would gripe less for sure. (I'm thinking either lessen or remove the malus all together, but adding (a) bonus(es) to balance it is fair as fair gets.) Quick bottom note real quick: This was completely unbecoming of everyone initially involved with getting vox balanced, but I would like to say something in regards to it all. First off, obviously, the banding together and assailing the staff because we're unhappy is stupid. Plain and simple. But there were... three vox prs put up in the last month or so. One was a joke, not to be actually taken serious in any regard and was an inside joke between some vox and some staff who like the 'don't headpat vox' joke. One was a revert to a pr that was directly removing a boon of vox when said boon would actually be useful. The third was an attempt to change a cosmetic piece of vox for rp and style purposes. (plus it would have actually been a malus to take said cosmetic anyways.) Disruption of any work or server was completely outside of the intended effects. If such a thing truly did happen, as someone who was involved in one way or another, I'd like to apologize.1 point

God everytime i see art of Dan Jello, i just imagine he somehow at some point got teleported back in time to lead a British regiment against the french, or maybe to become a pirate king only to be teleported back to the future. Awesome art1 point

I dunno what happened here but... I would like to see more fluff and quirks put into vox so they feel different from human or any other race. Smiles having no bones and using jelly as blood makes them feel very alien for example, perhaps something like that?1 point

I have something I'd like to state in regards to the current tensions between the 'vox metaclique' and the staff of paradise station currently. Neither of our behaviors have been acceptable, and only serve to feed one another into a circle of unending fighting. It's childish, and both sides need to stop. The vox players feel unrepresented and try to strike out, the admins refute such ideas. This isn't a case of one is right and the other is wrong, and it's not that both sides don't have good points either. The vox need to stop whining about misrepresentation and 'racism' and the admins need to keep a sharper ear out and an open mind for just what they might actually have an issue with. The vox players know what they don't like about current balance, and are ready to propose ideas. It's an obligation of the admins to make sure their new 'balance changes' are balanced for everyone buy the end of it (while still making changes). Work with each other and please stop arguing about events out of this thread. Thank you all for your feedback so far, and the comments about my apparent maturity. I am going to kindly ask we keep all discussion, argument, or griping about the other side having opinions out of this discussion. This discussion is about suggesting and discussing change for a race. Not arguing about it's community or anything of that likeness. Don't come here to fight people picking fights or pick a fight with vox, this is a public forum. Don't come here to fight people picking fights or pick a fight with non-vox, this is a public forum. If someone says something you don't like, ignore it. This isn't the place to 'duke it out' or argue with someone cause they said something you like. This is a discussion post about making balance changes.1 point

I did it. It's taken a full month, and I think there may still be some stuff in need of polish, but I finally finished making Paradise's Cyberiad in Minecraft. If you want to view it, you'll need a few things: EITHER - the Twitch launcher in order to download mod packs easily OR knowledge of how and where to backup and place Minecraft directories. Project Ozone 3: A New Way Forward Mr Crayfish's Furniture Mod for 1.12.2 (it doesn't come with the above, so you'll need to download and place it yourself) Minecraft 1.12.2 WITH Forge 14.23.5+ (any latest forge for 1.12.2 works, as far as I know) 8GB+ RAM and knowledge of how to allocate it in Minecraft. Trust me on this. Here's the ZIP for the directory itself; save, mods and all: https://www.dropbox.com/s/uan6jdnp5oeqeif/Project Ozone 3 A New Way Forward (1).zip?dl=0 And here's the ZIP for just the save file: https://www.dropbox.com/s/ryca3xigbrcehxv/cyberiad.zip?dl=0 I'd give instructions myself, but I'm pretty addled and tired from all the work this took. Help each other, yeah? The only caveat is that you should probably toggle the resource pack to on, because it was built with it in mind. If you have any questions or suggestions of other projects I should build for everyone's' amusement, feel free to share. If you don't really feel like downloading it, I totally get it, so here are a few sneak peeks, and you'll get the picture from these.
