The basics: I recently had a round where I was a wiznerd who got chomped on by a security officer who apparently was able to be changed only into xenos or statues. All of his attacks put me in low crit - I wasn't able to get up, die (succumb) or be healed (as I had no friendlies and couldn't move). After that I realised that this seems to happen quite often - I have to lie there hoping someone decides to come and rescue me or that I finally get into the state where I can succumb and ghost around freely. Suicide is obviously not the answer as it leaves you unclonable and unable to be revived by any standard means. So here's the solution: employ a system where a player is able to roll 1 d6 (or other, this may/may not need balancing) which will decide whether he will or will not be able to get up for a limited time and possibly heal themselves. Things in brackets are hidden from the player (or not, maybe?)
Way of use: verb in the GUI/integration into the resist verb/button
Time limit on use: Depending on the roll, possible base of 30 seconds.
How it works: Player in low crit (i.e. can't get up but you aren't in a condition bad enough to die either - a limbo) rolls a single d6. Possible results:
1 - [Critical failure] "You lacked the strength to get up. You fell immediately back to the ground, making your injuries severely worse. You succumb to death." [Death]
2 - [Failure] "You lacked the strength to get up. While trying to get up you have further opened your wounds and are now worse than before [additional damage, slight bleed applied, slow movement, -0 seconds of time standing up, +10 seconds to verb cooldown]
3 - [Minor failure] You do not move at all, pain overcoming your mind and paralysing your muscles. [No additional damage, no bleed applied, no movement, -0 seconds of time standing up, +0 seconds to verb cooldown]
4 - [Minor success] You get up but your pain filled mind doesn't allow you to rise without slightly worsening your condition. [No additional damage, slight bleed applied, slow movement, -5 seconds of time standing up, +5 seconds to verb cooldown]
5 - [success] You get up. [No additional damage, no bleed applied, slow movement, +0 seconds of time standing up, -0 seconds to verb cooldown]
6 - [Critical success] You carefully get up. You avoid worsening your injuries. Adrenaline fills your body allowing you to move freely and for a longer time. [No additional damage, no bleed effect, no slow movement, +10 seconds of time standing up, -10 seconds to verb cooldown]
Now, I am obviously not sure if this can or cannot be implemented. But I do think that it would make for a fine addition both in RP context as well in general gameplay sense. Probably needs some balancing, probably needs a text change but... what do you think?
That all being said. I know we have a limited pool of coders so if this IS indeed possible, i'd be willing to help with it. I have some experience with C, C# and the most robust ever, PAWN so hopefully if it were necessary I could throw in something from myself.
