I have been thinking: If I wanted to create a hostage situation as traitor, how would I do it? This made me realise just how hard it is to actually take a hostage.

Imagine this scenario: You and your cuffed hostage are sitting in the old bar. Security ignores your demands and instead decides to just charge you. Now how are you going to actually kill off the hostage before an army of tazer projectiles hits you? Of course some players would probably be able to build some kinda bomb that is triggered by a word/signal, but that still doesn't stop the second reason why security will probably just disregard a hostage: Even if you kill the hostage, they can just clone it afterwards (Except maybe if the bomb you have is really big but at that point you also start getting glares from Admins for bombing a big part of the station).

My suggestion aims to cover both the murder and revive denial of a hostage, with the goal to make a hostage situation a bigger threat.

The part with the actual Suggestion

When you grab someone from behind while holding a gun in one hand you would be able to hold your gun to their head, effectively making them your hostage (Would be cool if that also caused both players to be at the same tile with the hitbox of the hostage infront of the other). Now if at any point you decide to shoot your hostage it would kill them and destroy their brain, basically making cloning that much harder. The death of the hostage would be pretty much instant so the theoretical traitor would  have enough time left afterwards to fire a few shots at the charging security.

Well that's all for now, feel free to inform me if Paradise actually already has some kinda tool/mechanic that covers this scenario that I just don't know about yet.

If the brain is destroyed you can't clone them at all. The brain would need to be damaged. We don't really need any easier ways to permakill people than we already have, nor do we will need any one hit kill methods. Though if it just instacrit them to the point of needing medical aid or dying, that could be a decent/interesting mechanic. Otherwise....entirely against antags getting a semi easy instakill/permakill move.

Problem with a hostage situation is it pretty much requires the hostage to "play along" and with how killhappy some are on this server, most people have a natural reaction to scream for help on comms and spam scream once caught. I'm not saying its impossible...some people will play along...its even possible if they don't but it just makes things more difficult. But yea...kidnapping is a hell of alot more interesting than outright killing.

What could be combined is the "execution" action. Takes the same time as setup, and then does the multiplicative damage when wanted. Closest thing, and given they could just execute, can't be abused. Still, won't stop reviving the victim.

I don't think you'll ever be able to get past the 'lol cloned' problem of hostage taking but perhaps things could be done to improve the problem of security Bum Rushing the antag requiring a lot of time to kill the target that you should be using to defend yourself. We actually already have a mouth shot ability that does 5x damage with a gun by targeting the mouth and clicking on an adjacent target. Perhaps an advanced version of that could be possible where you still have a 5-10 second windup but then you hold it, shooting when the target moves/you're hit/click them again. Perhaps grab intent for hostage taking and kill intent for immediate shots. Though even with the damage is a little low. 100 damage is devastating but won't kill a healthy spaceman. Perhaps the damage needs to be upped on it? I mean if you had them still for that long you could have probably killed them with a toolbox. Plus nothing can be done similarly with a melee weapon. Perhaps targeting the throat with a sharp object should allow for similar hostage taking doing huge amounts of bleed damage. Not instantly deadly but very lethal.

Playing along can be fun too.

There was one round where Asrair Ziesuzuo was a vampire, and I was playing Katlyn Hudson, Security Officer.

I came across Asrair in maint and was quickly stunned, cuffed, and stripped of my headset.

Katlyn: Don't do this to me, I'm a good person.
Asrair: If you stop struggling, I'll take your body to Med Bay.
Katlyn looks defeated.

Asrair drained all my blood out, ditched the body in Med Bay by the cryotubes, then tipped off security like they were helping to hunt the vampires!

After I got cloned, I PDA'd Asrair with OOC markers to ask:
((What would make the round more interesting for you? Clone Memory Disorder to keep your cover? Or rat you out to security?))

The response I got back was that Asrair usually played it CMD, but I could do what I wanted.
So I played up full CMD; no memory after leaving brig to go out on patrol. No idea how I died, only that I did die.

I decided that something bad happened to me and that I was going to track down whatever killed me.
So I took lethals and went to patrol again.
Got caught by Asrair again.
Got Thralled by Asrair; who seemed very thrilled to have a thrall in security.

Unfortunately, the crew transfer shuttle got called about 2-3 minutes after that.
I can't remember a round that I've been more disappointed to see come to an end.

An amazing experience that came out of playing along with hostage, and then playing up CMD.

More of that please @Veloxi...good stuff!

Kudos to @Cheeseman as well.

I had a round once as an officer where I caught a rather charming vampire early. I visited them in the perma a few times and took quite a liking to them. So much of a liking that at one point I was concerned for how starved they looked and pulled my collar back offering them to feed. They refused. I decided that they were not the monster everyone was making them out to be. When the shuttle came, I volunteered to escort them from perma to the shuttle, only we went to the arrivals shuttle and I uncuffed them telling them that they don't deserve to be exprimented on and mutilated by NT so I was setting them free.

I've actually since attempted to replicate something similar any time I'VE been vampire because it was so interesting for me as an officer and I wanted to share that experience with others.

Here are some options.

  1. Hold the victim hostage naked in the chefs backroom, barricade the door and get ready to put them into the gibber once sec break down the doors.
  2. The same setup. but with the cremator.
  3. Hold their dead body hostage and threaten to blow up their body with SR and deepfry / eat their brain.'
  4. health sensor or signaller grenade assembly
  5. Throw them into the supermatter singulo(somehow?)
  6. Get really fat, monkey your victim and threaten to eat them(does this still work on paradise?)
  7. Get THEM really fat, threaten to gib them with mint toxin(bonus points if you are also fat)

I once had the idea for some kind of traitor item to enable hostage situations. A 'bomb collar' or something that destroys the brain when it goes off. But that runs into the same 'traitors just use it to perma-kill without any hostage taking involved' issue.

I believe that there is a mechanic from goon that could be used for this: if you are on grab intent, and click on someone next to you, you will hold your gun to their head with a very obvious chat message. If they try to move, they will be instantly hit by a bullet. (NOT an instant kill bullet, simply the gun's normal projectile. Would be pretty lethal with i.e. a .357 though.)
