The gateway is fun. It is also dangerous.

Often, a team of the most experienced and robust space adventurers will go to the Head of Personal, wait in line for ten or so minutes, suit up with all their gear. They set their radios to the correct channels, internals on. Hoorah, away they go together through the gateway!

They open their eyes and BOOM! What do they see? Is it a room full of hostile syndicate? Aliens? Treasure?

Nope, its either some arsehole clown bleeding out with a facehugger attached to his face or some bastard engineer player making off with any and all good gear to hoard for no reason.

This is not OK. It is a horrible feeling when you and a team all go through the trouble of getting permission, the correct equipment, suiting up and role playing with your team to find some power-gamer abusing the hell out of it.

The gateway is a large, powerful and dangerous machine and it should be treated as so. It seems incredibly dumb that Nanotrasen would leave a machine that could possibly infect and destroy their entire station right near the arrivals zone to the station where anyone can break in. Best case scenario is that some powergamer has run in for the good loot, worst case is a civilian or clown comes back infected with a virus or alien eggs buried deep inside them. This completely and utterly ruins it for the people that want to make an effort.

What I suggest is:

1: Make the Gateway Team its own job that start with Eva and Gateway access. They may also request to borrow security equipment from the Head of Security. (They can do this already, but an official job gives the question more weight.

2: Make sure the entire team is ready to go through the gateway before going through.

3: Move the gateway itself to a more secure part of the ship, possibly inside of security and protected by many doors, which can be opened at the captains request should the gateway be something peaceful like the cruise ship or beach.

4: Possibly make beepsky not attack gateway crew on sight for having restricted items they brought back. The amount of times people have been stunned transporting stuff to security its insane. If the gateway is inside security then this is not needed.

5: Gateway crew must announce what they brought back with them from the gateway. If security decides to do a random search and they have unannounced items, perhaps make it an arrestable offence depending on the the severity of the unannounced item.

6: Make entering the gateway without permission from the captain or being in the gateway team a medium to high level crime, as it is abandoning your job and the crew. It can also be a large danger to the crew if you bring something bad back with you.

7: Possible that the gateway team can have the ability to send one short message back through the gateway using a special single use radio to call for rescue or supplies. Supplies would be teleported to their location or where the gateway team came in from. Not entirely needed though.

One of the problems here is people seem to think "I found it in the gateway!" means it's now legal to have an illegal weapon.

I do agree that it's location is a problem, whether it's for the clown jumping through it, or antags using it to hide out. People seem very entitled to use it and can scream bloody murder if you don't let them - the idea of moving it would most likely get the same reactions.

I really, really, don't like the idea of making gateway explorer an official job at all, because of such entitlement, and for taking away from the roundtype and station.

Technically it is a serious crime to break into the gateway, but it's -very- hard to catch anyone (since they've gone through the gateway).

(Personally I don't think it really adds much, and in fact takes away from the station and the current round type, and we'd be better off without it.)

What if HoP had a camera to give the gateway crew that actually get permission, as well as make it more clear to security and the station that going there without permission is a serious crime.

Camera gets proof of people breaking those rules.
