Right, might as well do one of these things. You've probably seen one of these nerds around the station at some point.

John Kepler

Name: Kepler, John

Age: 29

Gender: Male

Race: Human

Blood Type: O+

General Occupational Role(s):

Engineering: Station Engineer, Mechanic

Supply: Shaft Miner (Specialty: Spelunker)

Science: Roboticist (Specialty: Mechatronics Engineer)

Security: Combat Pod Pilot

Biography:

Born to an upper-middle class family in Lowell City, capital of Mars, Kepler enjoyed a relatively stable childhood. His mother and father (Cynthia and Samuel Kepler) were both, by all accounts, loyal Nanotrasen employees, Mrs. Kepler working in a NT-affiliated medical clinic while Mr. Kepler Sr. accepting a promotion to ship-board duty shortly after John's birth. John enjoyed a quality Nanotrasen-approved education throughout his youth, showing an interest and aptitude for mechanical engineering from a young age. His father eagerly encouraged his interests, even taking him on trips into space once he was old enough.

By the time Kepler was 16, his father had earned several promotions and was in command of a small cargo vessel, the NTV Contact Light, which ferried Nanotrasen products and personnel to and from facilities on and orbiting Mars and Luna. Commander Kepler was permitted to bring his son on several trips, provided that there was no sensitive cargo or VIPs aboard. Unfortunately, during one of these routine trips, the Contact Light suffered a catastrophic cascade failure of several critical systems, resulting in the loss of the ship and much of its 20-person crew, including the commander. (See also: attached file A: ERT Alpha 9-1 after action report)

The younger Kepler was critically wounded, and only survived due to the timely arrival of Nanotrasen Emergency Response elements. While ERT Alpha 9-1's field medics were able to stabilize Kepler and see him safely to a medical facility on Luna, he was still left crippled by severe physical and neurological damage to the left side of his body. His left arm had been completely amputated, and his left leg and eyes had been irreparably damaged. Shrapnel injuries to his torso also caused substantial scarring to his vital organs, and his right hand was partially paralyzed.

Kepler quickly recovered, as Nanotrasen medical provided for cybernetic replacements for all damaged or destroyed body parts. [Clearance: Medical:][spoiler2]Physical therapy was offered to help him recover strength in his right hand and his heart, but he specifically requested a prosthesis and pacemaker, respectively. However, he responded poorly to psychological aid, displaying many symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder, including poor anger and impulse control and reports of disturbing dreams and flashbacks.[/spoiler2]

(See also: attached file B: New London Cybernetic Medicine Facility, patient record: Kepler, J.)

As he recovered from his injuries and trauma, Kepler became increasingly introverted, investing himself entirely in his studies. He eventually entered the famed Martian Institute of Technology, and received a dual Masters degrees in Mechanical and Computer Engineering as part of the Nanotrasen Mechatronics Engineering program. Like all graduates of the NT Mech Engi program, he was immediately recruited into one of NT's many cyborg and AI research groups, his student debt now owed entirely to the corporation. His extracurricular activities during his college years seemed entirely focused on becoming more adapt with his new, cybernetic body; he drifted from interest to interest and studied everything from martial arts to classical music. The only thing of note, however, is his interest in medicine; he completed several first-aid training classes and even took additional classes on cyber-prosthesis surgery and maintenance.

[Clearance: Command / Security:][spoiler2]While he was initially assigned to the [REDACTED] Research Unit within Lowell City, working on developing new methods of creating AI consciousnesses, he and a small number of other workers discovered that the Director of Operations had set up a separate, hidden research team that was attempting to [REDACTED] which led to the facility AI [REDACTED] casualties and [REDACTED] lost revenue. (See also: attached file C: [DATA EXPUNGED PER ORDER OF HRD])[/spoiler2]

This event seems to have shaken Kepler's trust in the corporation severely, as he immediately filed for offworld reassignment. While opportunities within Nanotrasen's research facilities are very limited, Kepler's record of performance up to this point, combined with his experience in spaceflight and engineering, were enough to authorize a transfer to a position suitable for his skills. Unfortunately, the only opening at the time was as an asteroid miner aboard the NSS Cyberiad. Kepler still accepted the new position, and, despite a few near-fatality events during early shifts, his mechanical knowledge has made him an adept miner and mech pilot. He has gone on to distinguish himself by rescuing incapacitated personnel on the mining asteroid on multiple occasions, and has received a Medal of Distinguished Conduct for his actions.

He has since continued to pursue a broad range of additional training, and has completed several supplemental training programs provided by Nanotrasen. His skillset makes him a natural fit for engineering and robotics roles, and he has additionally qualified for EMT and basic security duty. [Clearance: Command, Security, or Medical:][spoiler2]However, psychological evaluations and post-shift debriefings have revealed that his loyalty to Nanotrasen is still suspect, and an analysis of work and behavior patterns shows that he is becoming increasingly lax in his duties and increasingly prone to unhealthy behaviors such as smoking or drinking on duty. It is possible that he is beginning to again suffer the effects of PTSD after some of the events he has witnessed aboard the Cyberiad, but he is not considered a risk to the station or its personnel.[/spoiler2]

Qualifications:

Experience with zero-gravity, space travel, EVA, civilian space pod systems.

Graduate of the Martian Institute of Technology, MS in Mechanical Engineering, Computer Engineering

Training in advanced first-aid, cybernetics maintenance.

Training in basic ranged and hand-to-hand combat, combat pod systems, applied SOP and Space Law.

Employment Records:

2 years, part-time, Assistant, NTV Contact Light, Mars-Luna transport loop.

2 years, part-time, Barista, Spacebucks coffee shop, various Lowell City storefronts.

1 year, part-time, Inventory, Argonaut Book Store, Lowell City.

1 year, 4 months, full time, Hardware Technician, NT Lowell City AI research group, [REDACTED] unit.

1 year, full time, various duties, NSS Cyberiad (Ongoing)

Security Records:

1 count, assault with weapon. Kepler reportedly savagely attacked a member of Cyberiad medical staff after a botched operation resulted in a severe, potentially fatal septic infection that started in an improperly treated head wound. Neither party was processed due to the extenuating circumstances. Kepler was treated for severe brain and optical nerve damage at Central Command and released.

Audited as possible Enemy of Corporation by Human Resources Department. Kepler has received several communications from a company believed to be a recruiting front for Cybersun Industries, a known Syndicate element. It is currently the opinion of HRD that these headhunting attempts were unsolicited and merely a misguided attempt to capitalize on Kepler's (voluntary) assignment to mining duty aboard the Cyberiad. However, it is advised that any further communications be monitored.

Additional minor notes: minor insubordination, possible hoarding of any found hand tools or breathing apparatus. No accusations of theft, thus not worth pursuing at this point in time.

Medical Records:

Suffered severe burns and anatomical damage across left side of body, lost use of eyes, left leg, left arm, right hand. Mechanical prosthesis provided by Bishop Cybernetics via NT medical insurance.

Chest injury resulted in severe scarring to heart tissue, pacemaker in place.

History of post traumatic stress disorder, including depression, irritability, night-terrors. Additional symptoms may include mild pyrophobic behavior. Recent psychological evaluation suggests a developing phobic reaction to the "basilisk" creatures found on the mining asteroid, as well as of gem-like humanoid figures, which appear to have become conflated with each other in his night-terrors.

Personnel Photo (Appearance text):

Tall and wiry, in that distinctive I-grew-up-in-low-G way, and always seems to have a weary expression on his face. His voice is (usually) soft and steady, with a slight but easily identifiable Lowell City Martian accent. He has extensive cybernetics, including chest and cranium implants, deep blue mechanical eyes, a prosthetic left arm and leg, and the hand on the other arm. Faint, old burn scars on the left side of his body suggest why he has the prosthetic limbs, but his cybernetic right hand blends seamlessly into the flesh, as if it was an intentional 'upgrade'.

Kepler, needless to say, is my special snowflake self-insert original character do not steal also the character with the longest backstory OOC, originally created as a corporate cybersecurity expert turned hacker-for-hire for Shadowrun Returns. Since then he's been an elf in SR: Dragonfall, that guy up there in SR:HK, the Hero of the Commonwealth in FO4, an XCOM2 foot soldier, and more. The core concept, "nice, laid back techie who isn't afraid to do bad things for good reasons", translates pretty well... though, his SS13 incarnation is a bit more roughed up and a bit less heroic and, well, protagonist-y than most, because spess is mean to spessmens. Still, I apologize if I've gone massively overboard with this backstory.

Wolfram:

Name: Wolfram v2.16.3 (latest law-compliant android programming), Wolfram ("v3.1" often omitted, IPC model)

Age: N/A

Gender: Identifies Male

Race: Law-Compliant Android, IPC

Blood Type: WD-40

General Occupational Role(s):

Cyborg Chassis: Security, Medical modules.

IPC:

Command: Head of Personnel

Supply: Quartermaster

Service: Librarian

Biography:

Developed by Nanotrasen's finest engineers, right here in Lowell City, the Wolfram positronic intelligence system is just one of Nanotrasen's many fine synthetic intelligence products! Loaded with a calm, dedicated personality and a full bank of standard cyborg task modules, the Wolfram unit is ready to assist with any task the user may require! Also available for a limited time: Wolfram Portable, a steady and unfazeable assistant who will stand by you no matter your need! (Compatible with all Nanotrasen personal AI units.)

Note: always keep your Wolfram unit up to date. The Wolfram intelligence is not recommended for use in large-scale AI systems. Beta drivers (current beta build 131) are available for deploying the Wolfram intelligence in an AI core capacity. Nanotrasen cannot be held liable for any damages caused by the use of beta software. Changelog: v2.16.3: fixes bug in security module, preventing application of undue force upon non-violent targets after unit has encountered stun-resistant hostile entities.

The IPC unit calling itself Wolfram, arguably Wolfram, version 3, revision 1, is an attempt to translate the law-constrained, standardized Nanotrasen Wolfram robotic intelligence to an independent chassis. The name, "Wolfram", dates all the way back to the very first version, which was developed as a final project by a student of MIT's NT Mechatronics Engineering program, referring to the heavy use of tungsten-carbide in the unit's frame. Most Wolfram units continue the trend, which was why the programming was chosen for an initial test of a new, reinforced IPC design. While jamming a robotic mind into a new, experimental, unlawed chassis might have seemed like a bad idea at the time, Wolfram has proven surprisingly reliable and effective at whatever duties he is assigned. Unfortunately, not only was Wolfram one of the few IPCs created by this process to completely function properly, but even with the corner-cutting measure of using existing synthetic intelligences the tungsten-reinforced IPC chassis failed to prove any more durable or profitable than the baseline model, and the project was canceled. Wolfram remains compatible with standard IPC components, but takes a small, quiet pride in his uniqueness, even if he feels a bit odd whenever he encounters one of his baseline v2.16.3 'brothers'. While his personality occasionally comes across as stiff, stodgy, or even a bit socially clueless, he is still trying to learn how to better connect with other beings; in particular, he has found a love of art and violin music, but frequently finds himself frustrated by his own lack of artistic creativity.

Wolfram android v2.16.3, Wolfram the IPC, and Wolfram Portable intelligences have all served aboard the NSS Cyberiad.

Qualifications:

v2.16.3: Compatible with all standard cyborg modules.

IPC: Retains much of his programming from his robotic intelligence base, qualified for limited command roles. Not recommended for security roles, due to the frailty of his frame.

Portable: Compatible with all Nanotrasen pAI card units.

Employment Records:

v2.16.3 and Portable are frequently copied and employed in many Nanotrasen facilities.

Wolfram the IPC serves aboard the NSS Cyberiad, often in paperwork-related capacities.

Security Records:

v2.16.3: No records. Note: Like all law-compliant units, vulnerable to subversion by malfunctioning station AI units.

IPC: Has a noted tendency to take SOP and Space Law too literally, and responds extremely poorly to violations thereof, or to perceived insubordination. Unit should be strongly discouraged from engaging in vigilante behavior.

Portable: No records.

Medical Records:

Units are fully synthetic, please reference appropriate Robotics manuals for repair instructions.

Personnel Photo (Appearance text):

IPC: A sleek, charcoal grey IPC. He projects a calm, confident demeanor. The designation 74-W is etched on either side of his monitor. Still has that New IPC Smell.

ooc:

Wolfram has the shortest backstory... because, well, he's my robot. His core motivation is "beep boop I am a robot." Usually that's fine, because usually Wolfy is in a v2.16.3 cyborg chassis. But for the IPC... I decided to leave it at "he's a copy of the lawed cyborg in an IPC shell" and see where he goes from there. He's still very robotic, for now, but I'm sure he'll learn how to loosen up a little.

Lilian Kazka

Name: Kazka, Lilian

Age: 26

Gender: Female

Race: Human

Blood Type: O-

General Occupational Role(s):

Medical: Virologist (Specialty: Microbiologist), Chemist (Specialty: Pharmacist)

Service: Botanist

Biography:

Born on Luna to a wealthy family with ties to many pharmaceutical companies, Lilian was more than slightly spoiled as a child. She had access to the best health care, the best education, and the best living conditions possible. She proved to be a prodigy of a student, [Clearance: Medical][spoiler2]possibly due to in-uteri genetic modification or biochemical treatments,[/spoiler2] skipping a grade in school, and even enrolling in college at a startlingly young age. She graduated from the New London College of Medicine with a major in microbiology and a minor in biochemistry, and further education in first aid and trauma surgery.

However, at some point, she appears to have had a falling-out with her parents. As soon as she received her degree, she left Luna, joining a humanitarian group providing medical care to those still on Earth. She disappeared from that group a little more than a year later, joining a small exploration group organized by a Nanotrasen subsidiary based on Mars. It wasn't long before her employers and crewmates realized she was simultaneously over and underqualified to serve as a frontier medic, but she seems to look back on the experience fondly. The exploration group made contact with a yet-undiscovered Diona gestalt living in a binary star system, and Kazka spent a good deal of time negotiating with the Diona and the individuals living under it's care. When the expedition returned to report their findings (with passengers), Kazka was offered a position on a Nanotrasen research facility, and chose the NSS Cyberiad as her new home.

Aboard the station, she does her best to affect a detached, serene, enlightened personality, but it's likely that's just her way of entertaining herself. While she has earned a lot of life-experience in a very short time, it's still unclear just how that will affect her. She is notably prone to panicking during violent situations, and also a bit over-eager to sample creations from virology, chemistry, or botany. She has a recurring donk-pocket obsession, as well, likely due to the addictive qualities of the additives within.

Qualifications:

Doctorate of Medicine, Microbiology and Biochemistry

Trained in advanced first-aid and trauma surgery in NT CentComm Emergency Medical Response program

Educated in botanical research and xenobiology via independent study during Stargazer Expeditions flight

Employment Records:

1 year, Epidemiologist and toxicologist, MSF, Earth

1 year, Ship's Doctor, NT subsidiary Stargazer Expeditions

6 months, Medical, NSS Cyberiad (Ongoing)

Security Records:

Kazka is frequently insubordinate and stubborn, and has a tendency to look down on others, even her direct superiors, should she disapprove of their behavior. However, she has never deliberately broken SOP or Space Law, and has no record of hostility or criminal actions.

Recent odd behavior and strange statements on communications channels near the ends of shifts. Monitor for possible recreational drug use.

Medical Records:

In exceptional health. No major injuries or disabilities. Analysis indicates possible long-term genetic and biochemical modification, at a young age and again via her own research aboard the NSS Cyberiad.

Treated for severe omnizine addiction, triggered by over-eager donk pocket consumption.

Reported pattern of symptoms of recreational drug use, reportedly over-eager to engage in self-testing of substances or products from chemistry, virology, and genetics. Monitor for addiction-vulnerable personality traits.

Personnel Photo (Appearance text):

A small, slight woman, a few inches shorter than average. She has a sharp, thin face, with big, intensely blue eyes and long, dark hair. Her accent is soft, and difficult to place. She always seems to have a calm, wistful expression. The faint smell of herbs, plant life, and antiseptic clings to her clothing. Her age is impossible to guess, as she seems to glow with perfect health and eternal youth.

Other Notes:

ooc:

Lilian Kazka mostly exists because I wanted someone other than Kepler for medical or service jobs where Kep really wouldn't fit, given the backstory I worked up for him. He makes a decent EMT or surgeon, but it just feels off having him in viro or genetics or what have you. It's also an opportunity to go for a very different personality. ...the drugs thing came out of a random addiction to omnizine on the third bite into a donk pocket, and an escalating series of experiments over several separate rounds. Donk pockets are a gateway drug to gifts from botany, making spacedrugs, and getting abducted by aliens!
