Add "Attempting to form a labour union" as a capital crime and "Being a member of a labour union" as a major crime. In addition, mentioning the 'U-word' is a minor crime. So-called 'Nations' such as Cargonia, Atmosia, Engistan, Janitopia, and Securistan also count as labour unions for purposes of space law.

 

A labour union is defined as an organization of workers who have come together to achieve common goals such as protecting the integrity of their jobs, improving safety standards, achieving higher pay and benefits such as health care and retirement, and better working conditions.

 

Remember - Nanotrasen works towards galactic prosperity for all species. Do not oppose this wonderful goal.

I'd be strongly in favour of this, because it's in NT's best interests to prevent the formation of unions through any means possible.

 

It adds some nice flavour in a way that doesn't impede the round.

 

For reference here, this suggestion is exceedingly "nice". Almost every company/corporation has a policy that they will fire you on the spot if you even sneeze the word union.

Makes sense that NT would strongly oppose the idea of Unions on their ships and stations. Sadly, there is little reason to try and form a Union other than to try and create RP. However I like the idea and would be willing to, at the very least, try it out.

more ontopic: space law should be less convoluted, not more. adding 'rp crimes' which needs to be enforced on top of the real one will just create more of a headache for everyone involved than spacelaw already does

I disagree, here. Killing monkeys is already against space law, how often do you see security honestly bother with that?

 

There's little harm done in adding this, especially since it's such a specific thing.

 

Most people don't even know any of Space Law whatsoever, so I doubt they would leverage this as an opportunity to cause trouble.

 

At the very least we should add some anti-union corporate posters.

And pro-union posters in contraband crate. Quartemaster should have a hidden stash behind his office wall(smuggler satchel would be OP) containing some posters and trade union leader outfit.

And IAAs would have more job which is good. Its sad that they are de facto limited to security only.

Yep.

 

As someone who's worked both in unions and out of, pretty much every workplace (including the unionized ones!) have an overt policy about this.

 

In the unionized workplaces, management isn't unionized and bringing up union matters is going to make the managers make your job hell to try and get rid of you as a pro-union employee who makes heavy use of their union rights/contract is an employee who is a major pain in the ass who creates extra work for you.

 

In a non-union workplace there's pretty much always an agreement somewhere in your hiring package, and failing that there's always at least one document posted up somewhere that specifies the policy on that.

 

A better way to think of it is, having a union seriously impacts the revenue and productivity of a workplace. Therefore a company/corporation always has it in its interest to prevent the formation of one, because once you have a union in place it's almost impossible to get rid of. The cost of firing and replacing one or two employees or creating a union-hostile workplace is infinitely cheaper than allowing a union to form.

 

During recessions, companies will even deliberately lay off far more people than they have to to try and oust unions. They'll shrink a unionized department from fourty to five or so employees (they typically can't get rid of everyone), and make the workload unbearable so the unionized employees have a strong pressure to leave. Once they do, they hire private again.

 

Another tactic is to wait out your union contract until it expires (this generally takes 8 years, 5 years, +3 after expiration is how most contracts work) and stall on negotiations. As long as the contract is fully expired and you're stalling on negotiations, you can hire staff in as non-union and slowly phase out the union this way.

 

tl;dr a union is always bad for a business. A little union is fine and honestly a good thing, the problem is that there's never just a "little union".

 

So yes, you will be fired at most workplaces if you sneeze the word union.

Which means that on a Nanotrasen station you will be fired (out of a mass driver) if you even think the U-word. Central Command had quite enough of that nonsense in the Cargonian revolts thank you very much >:(

 

Basically though, this gives people an avenue to be shit disturbers without actually, y'know, griefing and breaking and fighting. And that's good, I want more ways to be a professional shit disturber.
