So maybe I can blame it on how often I play a Doctor, but the sheer amount of uncooperative patients can be overwhelming.

And sure, you can just ignore them, but the Hippocratic oath makes you feel uneasy.

That's why I'm wondering - how hard would it be, to actually add a muscle with a stun baton to the medbay?

Not your typical, everyday sec (they have lot to do without having to chase a guy who stole the soap from medbay), but instead just a guy dedicated to... let's say making troublemakers at medbay more cooperative?

What do you guys think?

Good idea/Bad idea?

I like the idea but it'd definitely need to be a separate job (like brig doc). Working sec alot I've definitely seen plenty of instances where officers (myself included) volunteer to stick around medbay when calls to medbay are becoming more frequent, but it could help sec with larger server pops if theyes didn't need to devote resources to this. Don't even need to make them thier own room or anything, just as the brig doc has to take a trip to medbay every shift to get the essentials, this medbay officer would have to take a trip to the brig to do the same.

The role could even help medbay with larger populations as the officer would have some sort of medical knowledge to help with overflow, plus having someone patrolling medbay would probably lead to less unattended dead bodies in the lobby.

Dunno what it takes to add a new job, but this is one I'd enjoy and even pay karma for.

So an Orderly.

That's the word I was looking for!

It would provide an alnternate option for being able to deal with troublesome patients without the need of calling sec.

I'd say an Orderly wouldn't even need to put people in cells, rather keeping them away from medbay.

Sec is supposed to be police of sorts, and we all know how hectic life on the station can be on red (or even blue) alert.

Many times, even if the officer manages to get to medbay it's often too late, the damage is already done.

As ZN23X stated, in calmer times such person could assist in basic medical aid, or even sit at the reception.

Dunno, I feel that there is a niche for that.

Especially, that many people don't play security, because it has a certain pressure and responsibility to it.

Orderly feels less stresful on the longer run.

Restoring the medical security post/checkpoint seems like a good thing. The exam room is only ever used for SSD storage these days anyways.

Making it a karma position or just an extra job would be fine, I'd stress that it should not be an alternate title of the security officer. Access, they really should only need sec, brig cells, sec equip, and medical access to their security locker and put a criminal in a holding cell in their office while waiting for security to come make an official arrest. Cloning and Surgery could also be added to the access list, as these are the two locations that a lot of intruders are trying to get to, so being able to quickly access and remove the unwanted (or help out with the growing corpse pile.)

Head of Staff would be HoS, though deferring to CMO on who is and is not trespassing or causing problems. Med Guard would primarily be focused on keeping medical safe and secure unless there is a station wide emergency (OPs, Blob, Active Slings or Cults, etc...)

IMO a similar job could be created for Cargo and Science, as these two departments often have problems of their own and desirable equipment to steal or use. I know some people will say add an engineering guard but I don't see the need for one when most engineers don't even want to stay in their own dept. Kitchen/Bartender guard could be possible but you'd need to expand them both and push maint out farther.

There's a PR for this.

I primarily play sec, and again comparing this to brig doc, I would love to play this as an alternate role maybe after a really stressful sec round to give me a bit of a break. Hell on larger pop I might just start going to the HOP n requesting this role sorta like gateway explorer. Basic sec access to get gear, and whatever access a medical doctor has at very least, if not all of medbay (aside from CMOs office). I'm gonna give this a go even if nothing else comes of it. Thanks for the idea.

Alright so I kind of went overboard with this. For anyone interested in playing this role, maybe taking it for a "test run" to see if its worth the developers time, here is a pre made form you can copy and paste to paper and hand to the HOP to request this job designation. Paperwork includes what the role entails, SOP, access, equipment, as well as the process the HOP needs to follow to create the job (its a custom job so it needs a little tweaking to have a medical badge to it instead of appearing to be an unknown or civilian on SEC HUDs, I chose paramedic because it appears as a medical badge, but a unique one that differentiates from standard medical staff).

I believe this technically should be a protected job that cannot be a traitor so it'd be nice if nobody abused this job for the sake of getting security access as a traitor until the devs can decide whether to make it a real job or not. Abuse it and I imagine not only will it not become a real job, but it probably won't be allowed through the HOP anymore either. This is why we can't have nice things :P

Anyhoo...heres the form...copy n paste, lets take this job for a spin!

EDIT: Needed to alter the order of the "HOP instructions" a bit. Tried doing this twice now n both times I've been given back a card with the name "Medbay Guard" with only paramedic access.

I definitely plan to join as a civilian and play this role any time the server pop is high and sec is fully staffed. I can't take any credit because the role was Tim's idea, I just ran with it. So thanks Tim :)

Selfishly probably just a way for me to continue playing sec even when sec is full since it's all I really enjoy lol

Also want to note, the request form is a bit wordy and I've tried playing this role twice, both times I was turned into a role called Medbay Guard with just paramedic access. HOP was wicked busy so I didn't bother getting back in line either time. Anyone planning to play this it'd be worth making the HOP aware you need your access manually altered and the access requirements are noted on the sheet.

Sounds like a good role. Just some thoughts for orderly

- starting uniform all white

- gets a belt with a retractable baton, cuffs, flash and pepper spray

- like the idea of them never leaving medbay so maybe an sop for detaining people would be using a patient room and waiting for a sec to escort to brig if needed

- gets basic medical doctor Access

- implanted as well so cant be traitor

So I've played this role a few times now. The difficulty of getting access (especially security access) varies depending on who is the HOS and HOP. While the goal of this class is to have an additional job to apply for when nothing bit civilian is available, it's far easier to join as a sec officer and just request medbay and surgery access with the title change. If you DO need to apply as a civilian I reccomend PDAing rhe CMO and HOS for permission while you wait in line and give the HOP your PDA as proof that theye gave approve. Just a note for anyone else who tries to take it for a spin.

I think this could work. A service job with possible titles being bouncer, orderly, and anything else that could be applied. They get (stun baton or telescopic baton) some (cuffs or zip ties) and their job to is to help keep order in kitchen, medbay, bar and botany. With those areas being the places they have access to. They can drag people passed out drunk to medbay, and keep peace in those areas, their job is not security kind of like the blueshield the most they should do is tie someone up and hand them over for sec to deal with

Edit: I also specifically didn't include armor because I don't want to encourage it just being a super greytide role and their job is not to deal with hostiles but ordinary people so armor wouldn't really be needed.

So...after playing this role a few times here's my review so far. A few shifts I got to play the role I intended, patrolling medbay, so far I've stopped 1 antag who was attacking someone in medbay, stopped a few scuffles, and arrested a few people who were wanted and just strolled into medbay. I keep being partially terrified someone is gonna complain to an admin about my "fake security class" and I'm gonna get hammered for valid hunting or something. I did spend a few shifts just literally helping where needed medically as there were no threats to medbay all shift.

Getting access is sometimes a pain in the ass...especially if the HOS isn't familiar with me. It'd be alot more fun to play if I didn't need to pull teeth to get access some rounds, half the time I'm waiting in thevery HOPs line and hearing about something awful happening in medbay that I WOULD be helping get with bit can't yet. Hopefully if I and others play the role enough it'll give reason to add it (dunno if anyone but me has tried...)

I am in favour of this as long as they didn't have access to the Brig and just had a locker with goodies inside the Medbay for their equipment so they would act more like a blueshield role in which they could detain and take people to the security for processing - but not act like a full blown security officer when they get bored of medbay.

Exactly. Me getting sec access is just for the sake of getting the gear needed to play the role because it doesn't actually exist right now.

I don't know what it takes to add stuff to the game but a locker in the exam room with whatever gear necessary with the guard spawning in the exam room or lobby would be sufficient.

Equipment I've been running with is:

Security belt- baton, pepperspray, flash, cuffs, energy bola

Other gear- med AND sec headset, armor, sec gas mask, sec HUD, extra cuffs in my bag.

Appearance- white jumpsuit, jack boots, fingerless gloves, white cap.

The armor n gas mask might be a bit overboard but it helps complete the black on white look hahaha

Personally I would give them a full security belt as you said. Medical headset only, sunglasses (Not HUDglasses). Armour and gasmask I think is a bit excessive although I think the helmet would be fine. This guy shouldn't be needing armour and stuff if he's just acting as a bouncer for medbay.

How about a subset job role within various departments like Security only not, more on hand muscle to keep basic trespassers out, break up the odd fight etc.

Sorta like a departmental guard - separate to security and reports direct to the department head of whatever department they work in with access to basic security equipment with a power to detain.

Sounds like a good idea.

Glad that you tested it.

I think it shows that there is a niche for such job.

And yeah, I'm not saying that the medbay is the only place that would need such bodyguard-ish service, but it's one of the places that needs it the most. Also gives sec more time to focus on actual antags and not being forced to chase greytide that are breaking stuff in medbay. ;)

Medbay guard isn't meant to be lethal, the priorities that this class should have is just keeping the patients and medical staff safe from troublemakers. :)

Agreed.

Seems like a solid role to play.

Just use the overwhelming might of five Medbay staff spamming disarm whilst another bloke slaps a straitjacket on them.

Or just sleeptoxin them.

The point is those docs could be doing other things.

My thought on this class isn't so much to deal with greytide...tho they can if needed...it's to have someone who is more well equipped to deal with the inevitable "SEC GET TO SURGERY, (insert dangerous thing here) IS KILLING US!"

Same thoughts at Tim...it's about protecting one of the most vital areas on the station. Especially on a server with a population that, at its peak, severely stresses the resources of both medbay and security.

...and obviously adding another job option for the same reason. For that reason I like the idea of exploring this for other depts as well. Cargo comes to mind.
