It's really not that hard to set up the tesla properly and keep it maintained. This guide will assume that you're doing it alone, either because you're the only engineer that signed up, or because everyone else decided they had better things to be doing. First off, you'll need to know what to bring to the tesla room with you, which you can aquire handily from around Engineering.

Containment
You will need the following items:
For the safest setup, a Tesla engine requires three layers of containment to ensure that the tesla ball stays safely within a confined space. On the innermost layer, a required 3x3 energy containment field. Additionally, you will need grounding rods to absorb the arcs of lightning so that they don't wreck other machinery/structure. On the middle layer is a large solid container constructed out of reinforced walls to keep out intruders/meteors as well as house all the equipment needed to run the engine. The outermost layer(optional) is a soft barrier constructed out of lattices and grilles to sop up meteors.

# When the containment field has surrounded the entire inner circle, return inside the station.

Finishing Up
Begin by placing platings down in an open space, this is where your Singularity generator will go. Follow this by building three tiles of lattice out in each direction and placing plating at the end of each of these. Continue placing lattice to make a box out of each of these. Make plating on each corner.
# Open the control box menu.
# Click "Toggle Power" to turn the power on.
# Set Particle Strength = 2.
# Walk down and look out the window. You will see a stream of green particles shoot out from the Particle Accelerator, and after a few seconds, a badass Tesla Ball will apear.
# Unlike the Singularity, the Tesla engine cannot enter a critical state in which it would be possible for it to escape containment. You can turn the Partice Accelerator off or leave it running for maximal power generation.

Now that you have done this, place a field generator on each of the external plating. Make sure that they are properly secured. Once secured, place 4 tiles of lattice out in any direction from the corner field generators. Only the corners need emitters(and they only need one emitter). At the end of these lattices place some plating(this is where the emitters will go soon).

Return to the SMES
Before attaching the emitters, you will need to build a perimeter out of either catwalks or plating so that you can lay cable all the way around. Do this in a way so that you can build cable coil nodes(endpoints) at each spot where the emitters would go. Ensure that the emitters are facing the field generators. Then you will need to wrench each of them down and weld them into place. You will turn them on later.
# Return to the leftmost engineering SMES and turn its input to charging. Do this for the rightmost SMESes as well. Do not have any SMESes begin charging until the Tesla is outputting power.
# Check that the SMES' "Stored Capacity" % is increasing and that "Input: Charging".
# If the "Output Load" equals the "Output Level", it means that power is getting bottle-necked by that SMES. Click the far-right "+" to increase the Output Level until the Output Load stops increasing, then click the "+" a few more times to give the Output Load some breathing room.
# Immediately set the Input Level higher than the Output Level you end up with in the above step.
#* The higher the Input Level, the faster the SMES's Stored Capacity will charge and be later useful for engine malfunctions.
# Ensure that the engine APC is charging (the one located in the same room, currently Northeast of the engine beside the lone SMES).

Hard Containment
Whenever making an engine that is susceptible to being tampered with or fragile to high-speed space rocks you will likely need a barrier from space. This is optional, but highly recommended.

Unlike the Singularity, the Tesla engine is capable of running indefinitely after it's turned on. Without tampering it's impossible for it to become a danger to the station or die out.
*Build walls or reinforced walls around your current constructions.

*Place wires around the interior perimeter of this containment too.

Particle Accelerator Optimization
*Ensure that there is an airlock leading in and out that is accessible only by engineering.

Upgrade the APC Power Cell
Soft Barriers
# Locate the APC on the wall beside the lone SMES unit, in the same room as the Particle Accelerator.
This is optional, but highly recommended.
# Unlock it with your ID Card.
#* Click on your ID Card to put it in your hand, then click on the APC.
# Set "Equipment" to "On", not "Auto".
#* This is to ensure that vital engineering equipment will be the last to fail should the APC's power cell run low. You can also turn off the lights to save power, although this is not really recommended as it makes it harder to see trespassers in engineering.
# Use a crowbar on the APC to open it.
# Click on the Power Cell to remove it.
# Find another Power Cell laying around and replace the Power Cell you just removed.
# Close the panel with the crowbar.
# Check the APC menu to make sure it is on and working.
# Lock the APC with your ID card.

*Along the outer walls, build a sections of grilles or walls to absorb the impact of the damage caused by meteors and further impede the incursion of intruders into the engine area.
Occasionally, bad stuff happens. Well, most of the time, bad stuff happens. Sometimes it is necessary to deactivate the engine as safely as possible because nobody can maintain it. Other times meteor showers and bombs endanger your containment machinery. Whatever the crisis, if you have followed the steps above it should be safe to simply turn the accelerator off. The engine will continue to generate power as the Tesla slowly starves and shrinks, so containment won't fail until the tesla dies out and long after.

Non-Standard Containment
*A thicker barrier means a better protection.
The default configuration for the tesla containment is not the most efficient, and variations to the position of the field generators, emitters, tesla coils and grounding rods, can bring about differing degrees of safety and power.
Safe experimentation is fine, as long as you always make sure the containment field is active and stable before activating the Particle Accelerator, as is the case with any and all setups.

Next, you will need to order a Particle Accelerator(PA) kit from cargo. Don't open it until you have it where you want to install it.
The tesla is - along with massive plasma infernos and large scale bombings - one of the most brutal forces on the station. Dangerous enough when set free, it becomes an electrificty-spewing, shuttle-calling, indiscriminately murdering monstrosity. Perhaps the most dramatic way to end a round as a traitor. The tesla engine works with the singularity beacon and is extremely lethal to anyone caught outside of a locker or without a pair of insulated gloves and a hardsuit.
You will need to construct it a minimum of 6 tiles away from containment. The Particle Accelerator is T-shaped and it fires in the direction of flat side of the T (You can rotate the machine). Each piece will need to be properly oriented, wrenched down, wired with cable coil, and screwed close.

Setting the tesla free is not the easiest task to complete as a regular crew traitor, and you will get robusted in short order if you are caught. Generally speaking, all you need to do is disable the containment field. This can be accomplished by deactivating the emitters. Alternatively, you can disable the engineering APC. If you are not an engineer and get identified doing this, you can expect to not make it onto the emergency shuttle alive.
Additionally, a PA control console will need to be constructed next to the PA with board from the cargo crate kit.

With the machines assembled, open the console and see if it detects all parts. Press "Run scan" if you have to. If that wont work, see to it that all parts are in the right place and try again.

Power Generation
In order to utilize the Tesla to make power, you will need the following:
*An Energy Ball Generator
*A few Tesla Coils
*A minimum of 2 SMES units

-The Energy Ball Generator must be ordered from Cargo.

-The Tesla Coils can be ordered from cargo or R&D.

-The SMES units can be ordered from R&D.
Energy Ball Generator
Place the Energy Ball Generator in the middle of the containment, in range of the Particle Accelerator.
Tesla Coils
Place the Tesla Coils right next to the containment, closer to it than the grounding rods. Once you do that, you should wrench them down onto a wire node(direction doesn't matter). The more Tesla Coils you place, the greater the power you will accumulate. The Tesla Coils will automatically generate power when shocked by the Tesla.

SMES
You will need at least two SMES units to manage the power from your engine and to power your containment. See here for a guide on SMES construction. Both of the SMES units should be hooked directly into the engine wire network(which is separate from the station). However the output of one SMES(SMES 1) will feed directly back into the engines wire network and the other SMES(SMES 2) will output into the stations power net.

Before starting the engine, SMES 1(For the containment) will need to have its output set to max, and SMES 2(For the station) will need to have its Input and Output set to 0.

Turning on the engine
Before doing anything else, put on Insulated Gloves and ensure you don't have any vital organs that rely on electricity. The tesla will shock everything nearby (PA, Emitter, and Containment Field not-included) if the grounding rods aren't properly set.

Once everything has been constructed. You will need to fill SMES 1 with at least 50k watts before attempting to turn the engine on(containment may fail otherwise). This can be done by using a P.A.C.M.A.N generator on the engine network for a bit of time.

While SMES 1 is charging you will need to drag a Tesla Generator node to the center of containment and leave it there.

Once SMES 1 has reached at least 50k watts stored, set its charge to off and set its output to max. Go to each emitter and turn them on, you will also need to turn on each field generator until a blue containment field completely encompasses inner containment.

Once containment is up, you will need to walk over to the Particle Accelerator and turn it on to power level 2. You can now leave the engine and it should run without issue.

The engine will continue to generate power as the tesla starves and shrinks, so containment SHOULDN'T fail until the tesla is sufficiently small enough that it cannot cause massive damage. However, the baby tesla will take a long time to die completely.

Sometimes it's a good idea to charge the SMES quickly (using the optional techniques above) and then turn off the engine safely until you need power again. This means that poor solo-engie can actually go do other stuff and leave engineering for a bit without inadvertently destroying the station.

The Tesla Engine

The Tesla Engine is a modern, efficient and safer alternative to the infamous Singularity Engine.

The energy ball, aka Tesla, emits a series of arcs which is then harvested by tesla coils.

Containment

For the safest setup, a Tesla engine requires three layers of containment to ensure that the tesla ball stays safely within a confined space. On the innermost layer, a required 3x3 energy containment field. Additionally, you will need grounding rods to absorb the arcs of lightning so that they don't wreck other machinery/structure. On the middle layer is a large solid container constructed out of reinforced walls to keep out intruders/meteors as well as house all the equipment needed to run the engine. The outermost layer(optional) is a soft barrier constructed out of lattices and grilles to sop up meteors.

Energy Field

An energy field is the only thing a tesla cannot travel through. If this fails, the tesla will breach containment. In other words, don't fuck up this step. You will need:

EngineContainmentTesla.png
 • A powerful energy source CableCoils.png SMES.png
 • A minimum of 4 field generators Field generator.png
 • A minimum of 2 Emitters Emitter.png
 • At least a 5x5 area
 • A minimum of 1 Grounding Rod Grounding rod.png

-The Grounding Rods can be acquired from either R&D or Cargo.

-The Field Generators can either be found in the Secure Storage, or ordered from Cargo.

-The Emitters can also be found in the Secure Storage, ordered from Cargo or printed from R&D.

Begin by placing platings down in an open space, this is where your Singularity generator will go. Follow this by building three tiles of lattice out in each direction and placing plating at the end of each of these. Continue placing lattice to make a box out of each of these. Make plating on each corner.

Hard Containment

EngineOuterContainmentTesla.png

Whenever making an engine that is susceptible to being tampered with or fragile to high-speed space rocks you will likely need a barrier from space. This is optional, but highly recommended.

 • Build walls or reinforced walls around your current constructions.
 • Place wires around the interior perimeter of this containment too.
 • Ensure that there is an airlock leading in and out that is accessible only by engineering.

Soft Barriers

This is optional, but highly recommended.

 • Along the outer walls, build a sections of grilles or walls to absorb the impact of the damage caused by meteors and further impede the incursion of intruders into the engine area.
 • A thicker barrier means a better protection.

Particle Accelerator

ParticleAccelerator.gif

Next, you will need to order a Particle Accelerator(PA) kit from cargo. Don't open it until you have it where you want to install it. You will need to construct it a minimum of 6 tiles away from containment. The Particle Accelerator is T-shaped and it fires in the direction of flat side of the T (You can rotate the machine). Each piece will need to be properly oriented, wrenched down, wired with cable coil, and screwed close.

 • An Energy Ball Generator Tesla gen.png
 • A few Tesla Coils Tesla coil.png
 • A minimum of 2 SMES units SMES.png

Go to each emitter and turn them on, you will also need to turn on each field generator until a blue containment field Containment field.gif completely encompasses inner containment.

Once containment is up, you will need to walk over to the Particle Accelerator and turn it on to power level 2. You can now leave the engine and it should run without issue.

Turning off the Engine

Occasionally, bad stuff happens. Well, most of the time, bad stuff happens. Sometimes it is necessary to deactivate the engine as safely as possible because nobody can maintain it. Other times meteor showers and bombs endanger your containment machinery. Whatever the crisis, if you have followed the steps above it should be safe to simply turn the accelerator off.
