Gas Turbine
Summary
The gas turbine is an alternative way to produce power on the station, exclusive to an Atmospheric Technician. Although it will probably be the last power source to be set up on the station, it is still capable of producing upwards of 100 kW. You can accomplish this with a method of pumping in compressed gas mixtures to pressurize the chamber, then ignite the mixture to pressurize it further. When turned on, the turbine utilizes this reaction to produce power relative to the pressure building in the chamber.
How To Set Up the Turbine
Tools you need
- Rapid Part Dispenser or Pipe Dispenser
- Wrench
- Atmospheric Access
- Basic Atmospheric Knowledge
Initial Setup
Burn Mix
You need to set up a burn mix. The idea is to produce the maximum amount of pressure in a confined room in order for the turbine to produce energy to power the station. In order to do that, you need a lot of heat.
In Atmospherics, the Mix Loop connects to all the different types of gases in the Gas Containers outside. Re-pipe the mix loop and place a Gas Mixer where node 1 and node 2 outlets are connected to the Oxygen and Plasma tanks. Set the gas mixer so that it outputs 67% Oxygen and 33% Plasma. Then, set the output to max pressure of 4500 kPa and turn it on.
This is how the nodes work.
This is what it should look like once you pipe everything accordingly.
Gas Mixing Tank Control
Once the gas mix is properly set, turn on all the Gas Pumps on and set to max leading to the Gas Mixing Container inside the Distribution Loop room. Make sure you turn off the pump that leads to the Waste Loop. Open the digital valve next to the Gas Mix Tank Control Computer.
If everything is done correctly, you should see Oxygen and Plasma inside the Gas Mixing Container. Finally, turn on the Gas pump That leads to the Turbine.
Turbine Setup
Inside the Turbine Room, you'll see a few Gas Pumps leading to the Turbine Airlock. Turn those one and set them to max pressure of 4500 kPa, including the one inside the 'Turbine Internal Airlock' (Warning: Do not open the 'Turbine External Airlock'!). Next, you want to press a button to open the blast doors behind the turbine vent. Finally, press the igniter button and you should see the burn mix catch on fire causing a lot of pressure inside the external turbine room.
Gas Turbine
To start up the turbine, find the Gas Turbine Control Computer and set the Turbine status to 'On'.
SMES
The final step is to harness and output power to the station. Go to the SMES and under Input Management, set the Charge Mode to Auto and Input Level to Max. Under Output Management, set the Output Status to Online and Output Level to 100,000.
Tips
- A fully upgraded Turbine can output 300 Kilowatts of power. You'll need to upgrade the SMES as well to be able to take advantage of it.
- The Gas Mixing Chamber can be bypassed to have a direct link to the turbine pipe
- Replacing the Pressure Pumps with Volumes will not effect the amount of power it will output. It would only create a huge bottle neck that you may likely have to deal with later if things do fail.
