So you want to be a virologist, creator of a <strike> lethal</strike> beneficial virus? Or just want to cure viruses that plague the station? Then this is the guide for you!
A Guide to Surgery
Here you'll learn how to make viruses and how to cure them.
A full set of surgery tools can be found in each Operating Theatre locker at the start of the round, though they are often moved into a bag near the operating table by surgeons. Once a surgery has been initiated, the nearby operating computer will give you a hint towards the next step. For Synthetic surgery, see Here.

Surgical Tools
Every operating theatre is equipped with a full suite of surgical tools. In the event that surgical tools go missing, you can either have them manufactured at an autolathe or order them from Cargo.

Surgery can also be performed with other tools if proper surgical implements are not readily available. Use of these tools dramatically decreases the likelihood of successfully completing a step and often causes collateral damage, especially when attempting to make the initial incision. Furthermore, surgical procedures can be performed on tables and rollerbeds as well, with a 66% and 33% additional chance of failure respectively.

Every virus behaves differently, from created viruses to event spawned viruses. Most viruses can spread themselves to other humanoids near the host in one way or another. These types of spread are:
* Scalpel: Kitchen Knife (90%), Glass Shard (60%), Scissors (12%), Claymore (6%), Energy Axe (6%), Energy Dagger (6%), Chainsaw (1%)
* Airborne - The most dangerous and quick spreading, if you are anywhere within the breathing area of the infected crew member, you have a chance to be infected. Wearing internals stops further infections.
* Hemostat: Cable Coil (90%), Mouse Trap (25%)
* Direct Contact - Requires you to touch, been touched, or be extremely close to the source of the infection. The infection will be spread by the skin and bodily fluids of an infected person, but will not survive long in the air. Wearing protective clothing and avoiding infected are great ways of not getting infected yourself.
* Retractors: Crowbar (90%), Fork (60%)
* Blood - The infection will be spread by blood from the infected person. Beneficial viruses usually fall under this category.
* Bone Gel: Screwdriver (90%).
* Special - The disease is not normally contagious and the affected crewman has been infected by a non-human vector source. You can work with the infected without risk yourself unless they expose you to the same vector source that infected them.
* Bone Setter: Wrench (90%).
* Cautery: Cigarette (90%), Lighter (60%), Welding Tool (30%)
* FixOVein: Cable Coil (90%).
* Circular Saw: Hatchet (90%), Armblade (75%) (Amputation Only)
* Surgical Drill: Pen (90%) (Cavity Only), Exosuit Drill (60%) (Dental Only), Mining Drill (60%) (Dental Only), Metal Rods (60%) (Cavity Only), Screwdriver (20%) (Dental Only)
<br><br>
Notable exceptions:

Nearly all viruses transfer by giving humanoids an infected blood sample using either a syringe, a pill or other types of food/drinks or by using the virologists agent item Viral Injector. Smoke grenades or syringe guns won't work.
* Debridement: Use a Kitchen Knife or a Glass Shard to remove a dead tissue.
Every virus or vaccine only requires 1u to infect or cure somebody.
* Facial Reconstruction: Use a Kitchen Knife or a Glass Shard to make an incision.
* Implant Removal: Use a Crowbar to extract an implant.
* Internal Damage Repair: Use a Plasmacutter to fix burn damage.
* Open/Close Hatch: Use a Retractor or any kitchen utensil to open or close the hatch.
* Organ Removal: Use a Fork to extract an organ, then a Crowbar to continue.
* Removing a Rigsuit: Use a Welding Tool to cut a rig open.
* Unscrew Hatch: Use a Screwdriver, a Kitchen Knife or a Coin to open the hatch.

Each virus also has their own chemical(s) that it the infected needs to ingest for him to be cured. See REF TO VIRUSES here for the cures for the known viruses.
Infection
The virus has a chance to be cured once the infected humanoid has the chemical(s) in his body. Once the victim is cured he will be immune for that virus till he gets cloned or put in another body.
Infections can be caused by a myriad of sources, from untreated burns to uncleanly surgical tools. The following factors contribute to the likelihood of a surgical procedure causing infection: unhygienic surroundings (including blood and debris), dirty surgical tools, unwashed hands, improper/absent usage of sterile gloves, improper/absent usage of sterile masks, improper storage of transplantable limbs/organs, and multiple people in a single operating theatre.
A good idea is to get a blood sample of the person you cured to make a vaccine. See REF TO CURING HERE for more details.

Tools
Failure to keep an operating theatre and its tools clean, along with adequate use of protective equipment (gloves, masks) will result in infection. It is paramount that every surgeon practices adequate hygiene and safety precautions, limits the active number of patients in their theatre to one, washes their hands between every surgery, and keeps the operating theatre sterile.

The following items will be used during researching:
If a patient manages to contract - or is presently suffering from - an infection administer spaceacillin. In lieu of spaceacillin, compounds containing high levels of ethanol (preferably straight ethanol) can be used to disinfect organs during the organ manipulation surgery.

* Beaker (to mix viruses and store diseases)
Prepping for Surgery
* Dropper or Pipette (to carefully measure the units)
Now that you understand the basics of both surgical tools and infections it's time to prep for performing the surgery itself. Make sure you diagnose what's wrong with the patient prior to attempting surgery via the use of the Advanced Body Scanner. There are also a few caveats to surgical prep work such as:
* Pen (to label your beakers)
* Flu or Rhinovirus Culture Bottle (to start your virus)

Equipment
* If anyone is pulling on the patient, the surgery will not work properly. Make sure no one is pulling the patient.

Should a virus start spreading on the station (or should you work on something nasty and use the monkeys for it), you have to keep your workplace sterile and yourself safe. For this, you'll find these useful:
* The patient needs to be healed as much as possible prior to surgical intervention, as many surgeries won't take when performed on severely injured persons.

* Level-3 Bio Hood (against On-Contact viruses)
* All patients require some form of anesthetic, such as the anesthetic tank, ether, or hydrdocodone. Failure to use anesthetic will increase the chance of failure on each step.
* Level-3 Bio Suit (against On-Contact viruses)
* Internals (against Airborne viruses)
* Latex Gloves (against On-Contact viruses)
* Sterile mask

PanD.E.M.I.C 2200
* If the patient is Vox or Plasmaman do not administer tank-based anesthetic. In the case of Vox and Plasmamen, removing their internals can be fatal.
This is your best friend while you do your job. Not only can this bad boy tell you what is in a blood sample. It can also duplicate any virus in that sample for further <strike> use</strike> research.
You can do the following with the machine
* See the statistics of a virus that is put into the machine.
* Make a new virus culture for later use. (Use this when making advanced viruses)
* Make vaccines using blood from a patient that was cured from a virus prior.

Curing a virus
<div class="toccolours mw-collapsible mw-collapsed" style="width:99%">
So you're tasked with curing a virus that is <strike>finally purging</strike> harming the stations inhabitants? Well you're just a few steps away of being the unsung hero!
The following is a list of steps to prep for surgical procedures. Please ensure you diagnose your patient prior to prepping for surgical intervention.

Getting the first infected
<div class="mw-collapsible-content">
First priority is finding the crewmember who is infected and getting him to medbay into isolation as fast as possible. It is easier to cure a singular person compared to curing a whole station.
# Find a suitable operating table. In absence of an operating table, a rollerbed or table may be used (with a higher likelihood of surgical errors).
Once you have the infected you'll want to get the cure in him as soon as possible. Once he is cured you will have to take a blood sample for the next step. Some patients might need some persuasion to help you cure them.
# Make sure you're wearing latex gloves and a sterile mask.
# Use a sink to wash your hands. Unclean hands can result in infections.
# Click+drag the person to the operating table to lay them down on it.
# Check to ensure whether or not your patient is able to be safely anesthetized. Species such as Plasmamen and Vox can not be anesthetized and will optionally require ether, morphine (addictive), salicylic acid, or hydrocodone.
# Pick up a medical mask and anesthetic tank.
# Click+drag their body onto yours to view their inventory. Click on the link beside "Mask" to remove their mask if they have one. Do the same for the link beside "Back" to remove their backpack.
# With the medical mask in your active hand click on the "Nothing" link at the top beside "Head (Mask)". In a few seconds, you will equip them with the medical mask.
# Place the anesthetic tank in your active hand, then click the "Nothing" link in their inventory window beside "Back" to equip it on their back.
# A new link will appear beside the sleeping agent called "Set internals". Click on it to turn on the gas. It will force them asleep in about 5 seconds. You are now ready to proceed with surgery.
# Make sure you're set on the Help intent.
</div></div>

Getting the vaccine
Basic Surgery List
Once you have the blood of a cured subject you can start mass producing the cure. To do this you'll need the Pandemic.
# Put the blood in the [[REF HERE | PANDEMIC]. A syringe can be put into the machine
# Click on the create vaccine button next to the virus you want to make the vaccine for. If the blood contains multiple antibodies to different viruses you'll have more than one option.
# Repeat till you have enough vaccine.
# Bring the bottles to chemistry so they can pill the vaccine into 1u pills. Make sure that they call it a suiting name else it might get lost in a pile of pills without people knowing what it actually cures.

A vaccine is spread just like a virus. So you can just take a sip from the bottle to cure yourself.
While there are a number of surgical procedures one can perform, the following are some of the most common procedures that every surgeon should familiarize themselves with.

Spreading the <strike>love</strike> vaccine
* To stop a surgery at any point in time, hold the scalpel tool in your active hand and a cautery in your off-hand. You can also switch intents prior to making the first incision.
Curing the infected will be easy once you have the vaccine. A single dose of 1u will cure anybody and will make non infected immune for the virus. Be sure to get everybody cured since otherwise bad things can happen.

Infection Listings
* Cybernetic Implant Surgery falls under Organ Manipulation Surgery.
Thankfully, humanity has managed to cure and eliminate almost all of the diseases that plagued its infancy. However, the vast reaches of space have been found to harbor new illnesses that can affect the unprepared staff on Nanotrasen research stations.

</div></div>

An advanced virus can have up to 6 symptoms. You do this by mixing two virus samples together. By the powers of RNG you can get the desired outcome.
<div class="toccolours mw-collapsible mw-collapsed" style="width:99%">
Every symptom added will influence the statistics of the virus. Every virus has the following stats as a baseline.
{| class="wikitable" border="1"; border="1"; || style="text-align: center;"

! scope="col" | Resistance
! scope="col" | Stage speed

Having more symptoms will lower the statistic of transmittability. Thus having more symptoms is not always better in some cases.

Engineering the perfect virus
Internal Bleeding Surgery
So you think you're ready to make a virus that can <strike>finally get rid of that abomination</strike> benefit the crew?
<small><i>Repairing damaged arteries and veins within the body to stop internal bleeding.</i></small>
Before you start ensure that you have thought of a set of symptoms you want the virus to have. Once you have the symptoms you can begin.
The general method to get a symptom goes as follows.
# Get a virus sample in a beaker. Use the Dropper or pipette for this.
# Add 1u of the chemical you need for the symptom to the beaker. This makes the virus mutate a new random symptom.
# Put the sample in the PanD.E.M.I.C 2200 and see if you got the symptom you need. If so make a new culture. Naming your cultures accordingly will help you long term.
# Optional remove the unwanted symptom using Diphenhydramine.

Doing this for each symptom in one virus sample will lead to a virus with a maximum of 5 symptoms, and after the 4th symptom it won't be certain if the 5th will be generated or will replace an existing one. If you want to get the maximum out of your virus you can make two different virus samples with a combined symptom size of 6 and comebine those till the result has all 6 symptoms.

Understanding Stats
<div class="toccolours mw-collapsible mw-collapsed" style="width:99%">

After you're done mixing your disease, stats from the symptoms are added together to make disease stats. Here's what exactly they do:
Limb Attachment Surgery
<small><i>Re-attaching severed limbs</i></small>

* Stealth of 1 or highter will hide your disease from MedHUDs. Stealth of 2 or higher will hide your disease from Health Analyzers and Full Body Scanners. Stealth of 3 or higher will hide it from P.A.N.D.E.M.I.C. machine.
<div class="mw-collapsible-content">
* Transmission is determined as follows: (disease's transmission - amount of symptoms). 1 or less is blood, 2-4 is contact, 5 is airbone. However, sneezing will force it to be airbone.
# Aim for the patient's affected (missing) limb using the Damage Zone.
* Chance of advancing a stage per tick is 2% or stage speed, whichever is higher.
# Use the Scalpel to select the "Limb Attachment" Surgery.
* Cure depends on resistance and amount of symptoms: resistance - (amount of symptoms / 2)
# Attach the appropriate missing limb (theirs or someone elses).
# Use the Hemostat to reconnect the nerves and muscles and finish. This step isn't needed for IPC limbs.

{| class="wikitable" style="text-align: center;"

|Sodium Chloride||Sugar||Orange juice||Spaceacilin||Saline-Glucose Solution||Ethanol||Teporone||Diphenhydramine||Lipolicide||Silver||Gold

* Chance of it being cured every tick is 15 - resistance, but always between 10 and 20.

* Transmission affects how much protective gear you must have to protect yourself from it.

A Guide to Surgery

A full set of surgery tools can be found in each Operating Theatre locker at the start of the round, though they are often moved into a bag near the operating table by surgeons. Once a surgery has been initiated, the nearby operating computer will give you a hint towards the next step. For Synthetic surgery, see Here.

Surgical Tools Saw.png

Every operating theatre is equipped with a full suite of surgical tools. In the event that surgical tools go missing, you can either have them manufactured at an autolathe or order them from Cargo.

The following are the standard surgical tools most doctors will need:

 • Scalpel.png Scalpel: Creates & mends incisions.
 • Hemostat.png Hemostat: Ties bleeders, and removes objects.
 • Retractor.png Retractors: Opens incisions and cavities.
 • Bone setter.png Bone Setter: Sets broken bones in place.
 • Bone gel.png Bone Gel: Mends broken bones back together.
 • Cautery.png Cautery: Cauterizes incisions and debrides.
 • Fixovein.png FixOVein: Mends ruptured arteries and veins.
 • Saw.png Circular Saw: Saws through bone and amputates limbs.
 • Drill.png Surgical Drill: Creates cavity spaces for implants.
 • File:Mmi empty.png MMI: Provides storage for brains.
 • Autopsy scanner.png Autopsy Scanner: Provides autopsy results.
 • Anesthetics.png Anesthetic Tank: Anesthetizes patients.
 • Sterilemask.png Sterile Mask: Prevents infections.
 • LGloves.png Latex Gloves: Prevents infections.
 • Scalpellaser.png Advanced Laser Scalpel: A scalpel that can also serve as a cautery and hemostat for clamping bleeders.
 • IMS.png Incision Management System: A scalpel, hemostat, retractor, and cautery all in one. Retractor function takes precedence over hemostat in certain situations.

Ghetto Surgery Hatchet.png

Surgery can also be performed with other tools if proper surgical implements are not readily available. Use of these tools dramatically decreases the likelihood of successfully completing a step and often causes collateral damage, especially when attempting to make the initial incision. Furthermore, surgical procedures can be performed on tables and rollerbeds as well, with a 66% and 33% additional chance of failure respectively.

The following is a list of non-standard surgical tools for ghetto surgery:

 • Scalpel.png Scalpel: File:Kitchenknife.gif Kitchen Knife (90%), File:Glassshard.gif Glass Shard (60%), Scissors.png Scissors (12%), Claymore.png Claymore (6%), Energyaxe.gif Energy Axe (6%), Edagger.gif Energy Dagger (6%), Chainsaw.gif Chainsaw (1%)

 • Open/Close Hatch: Use a Retractor.png Retractor or any File:Fork.gif kitchen utensil to open or close the hatch.
 • Organ Removal: Use a File:Fork.gif Fork to extract an organ, then a Crowbar.png Crowbar to continue.
 • Removing a Rigsuit: Use a Welder.png Welding Tool to cut a rig open.
 • Unscrew Hatch: Use a Screwdriver tool.png Screwdriver, a File:Kitchenknife.gif Kitchen Knife or a Coin silver.png Coin to open the hatch.

Infection Cautery.png

Infections can be caused by a myriad of sources, from untreated burns to uncleanly surgical tools. The following factors contribute to the likelihood of a surgical procedure causing infection: unhygienic surroundings (including blood and debris), dirty surgical tools, unwashed hands, improper/absent usage of sterile gloves, improper/absent usage of sterile masks, improper storage of transplantable limbs/organs, and multiple people in a single operating theatre.

If a patient manages to contract - or is presently suffering from - an infection administer spaceacillin. In lieu of spaceacillin, compounds containing high levels of ethanol (preferably straight ethanol) can be used to disinfect organs during the organ manipulation surgery.

Prepping for Surgery LGloves.png

Now that you understand the basics of both surgical tools and infections it's time to prep for performing the surgery itself. Make sure you diagnose what's wrong with the patient prior to attempting surgery via the use of the Advanced Body Scanner. There are also a few caveats to surgical prep work such as:

 • If anyone is pulling on the patient, the surgery will not work properly. Make sure no one is pulling the patient.
 • The patient needs to be healed as much as possible prior to surgical intervention, as many surgeries won't take when performed on severely injured persons.
 • All patients require some form of anesthetic, such as the anesthetic tank, ether, or hydrdocodone. Failure to use anesthetic will increase the chance of failure on each step.
 • If the patient is Vox or Plasmaman do not administer tank-based anesthetic. In the case of Vox and Plasmamen, removing their internals can be fatal.

The following is a list of steps to prep for surgical procedures. Please ensure you diagnose your patient prior to prepping for surgical intervention.

 1. Find a suitable OpTable.gif operating table. In absence of an operating table, a rollerbed or table may be used (with a higher likelihood of surgical errors).
 2. Make sure you're wearing LGloves.png latex gloves and a Sterilemask.png sterile mask.
 3. Use a sink to wash your hands. Unclean hands can result in infections.
 4. Click+drag the person to the operating table to lay them down on it.
 5. Check to ensure whether or not your patient is able to be safely anesthetized. Species such as Plasmamen and Vox can not be anesthetized and will optionally require ether, morphine (addictive), salicylic acid, or hydrocodone.
 6. Pick up a BreathingMask.png medical mask and Anesthetics.png anesthetic tank.
 7. Click+drag their body onto yours to view their inventory. Click on the link beside "Mask" to remove their mask if they have one. Do the same for the link beside "Back" to remove their backpack.
 8. With the medical mask in your active hand click on the "Nothing" link at the top beside "Head (Mask)". In a few seconds, you will equip them with the medical mask.
 9. Place the anesthetic tank in your active hand, then click the "Nothing" link in their inventory window beside "Back" to equip it on their back.
 10. A new link will appear beside the sleeping agent called "Set internals". Click on it to turn on the gas. It will force them asleep in about 5 seconds. You are now ready to proceed with surgery.
 11. Make sure you're set on the Help.png Help intent.

Basic Surgery List Scalpel.png

While there are a number of surgical procedures one can perform, the following are some of the most common procedures that every surgeon should familiarize themselves with.

 • To stop a surgery at any point in time, hold the scalpel tool in your active hand and a cautery in your off-hand. You can also switch intents prior to making the first incision.
 • Cybernetic Implant Surgery falls under Organ Manipulation Surgery.
