Here you will learn how to make viruses and how to cure them.

The first, and most important way to prevent 99% of infections, it's proper hazard wear, and knowing how to keep the infection from spreading.


===Terminology===
=Virology 101=
Virus - An infectious disease, almost always giving negative symptoms.
Infected - Someone who has a virus in their bloodstream.
Symptom - The effect a virus has on the infected.
Pathogen - An alternate name for a virus.
Antigen - A substance that can help create antibodies.  Used for immunizing.  Is always recorded as two uppercase letters e.g. PO
Stamm - A unique identifying number for an analyzed disease.  Is always recorded as a four figure number following a hash e.g. Stamm #1452
Rate of Progression - How fast a pathogen's symptoms manifest, average is 100.
Symptom Strength - how potent the symptom is, only affects certain symptoms, especially ones that deal damage.
Symptom Veroisty - unknown.

===Protective Equipment===
==Viruses==
The following will protect you, from the dangerous infections of space, each giving more and more (till total) protection against infection:
* Level-3 Bio Hood.
* [[File:BioSuit.png]] Level-3 Bio Suit.
* [[File:LGloves.png]] Latex Gloves.
* Shoes (White shoes and [[Galoshes]] are the best).
* [[File:EmergencyOxygenTank.png]] Internal air supply including [[File:BreathMask.png]] Breath Mask or [[File:Gasmasks.gif]] Gas Mask.


For those not in the medical profession, the following commonly available items will help reduce your chances of infection:
Every virus behaves differently, from created viruses to event spawned viruses. Most viruses can spread themselves to other humanoids near the host in one way or another. These types of spread are:
* Airborne - The most dangerous and quick spreading, if you are anywhere within the breathing area of the infected crew member, you have a chance to be infected. Wearing internals stops further infections.
* Direct Contact - Requires you to touch, been touched, or be extremely close to the source of the infection. The infection will be spread by the skin and bodily fluids of an infected person, but will not survive long in the air. Wearing protective clothing and avoiding infected are great ways of not getting infected yourself.
* Blood - The infection will be spread by blood from the infected person. Beneficial viruses usually fall under this category.
* Special - The disease is not normally contagious and the affected crewman has been infected by a non-human vector source. You can work with the infected without risk yourself unless they expose you to the same vector source that infected them.


* Any internals hooked up to a tank and on.
All viruses that spread with blood or above mentioned transfer by giving humanoids an infected blood sample using either a syringe, a pill or other types of food/drinks or by using the virologists agent item [[Syndicate Items#Job Specific Tools|Viral Injector]]. Smoke grenades or syringe guns will not work.
* Gloves.
Every virus or vaccine only requires any amount of units to infect or cure somebody, 0.1 unit will work.
* Clothes.


===Isolation===
Each virus will not be visible on the [[Medical Items#Medical_HUD|Medical HUD]] till they reach a later stage, meaning at least at the halfway point of the stages (rounded up). For example, the Brainrot virus has 4 stages. The virus will then be visible starting at the 2nd stage. Any advanced virus has 5 stages total and it can be visible on the HUD starting at the 3rd stage depending on the stealth stat (see [[#Advanced Diseases|Advanced Diseases]] for more information).
If you, or another crew member are infected, do not spread the infection further. Seek the isolation bay of the medical wing, or head to a room no one will enter but yourself and other infected.


===Cleanliness===
Each virus also has their own chemical(s) that the infected needs to ingest for them to be cured. See [[#Infection Listings|Infection Listings]] for the cures for the known viruses.
Cleaning blood spills from the ground will prevent contact contamination, make sure blood is cleaned from the floor at all time. Any blood splatter out there could hold a dreaded space infection. Contact a [[janitor]] if you see blood on the floor, do not interact with the blood if you suspect possible infection chance. You have a bottle of space cleaner in Virology to clean virology itself. If an outbreak gets out, make sure people are cleaning blood.
The virus has a chance to be cured once the infected humanoid has the chemical(s) in their body. Once the victim is cured, they will be immune for that virus till they get cloned or put in another body.
A good idea is to get a blood sample of the person you cured to make a vaccine. See [[#Curing A Virus|Curing A Virus]] for more details.


Mucus caused by infected people sneezing also carries the same problem.

You have a number of machines around virology which help in the both analysing, curing, and research viruses.


* '''Isolation Centrifuge''' - This machine takes vials filled with blood and isolates pathogens or antibodies. It will automatically detect whether a sample of blood contains either, and can be useful for telling which people are infected. It can then isolate the pathogen, producing a virus dish, or isolate the antibody, producing a vial of antibodies.
Should a virus start spreading on the station (or should you work on something nasty and use the monkeys for it), you have to keep your workplace sterile and yourself safe. For this, you will find these useful:
* '''Pathogenic incubator''' - This machine takes virus dishes made by the centrifuge, or from the samples in your lab and grows them. It requires diluted milk (virus food) to work however, so ask the [[Chemist]] or [[Chef]] or use the virus food dispenser in Virology. The machine will ping when the virus reaches a large enough size to be worked with. Radiating the machine may cause the virus to mutate and change one or more of it's symptoms. You can also add a beaker of blood to the machine and infect it with whatever virus dish is currently in the machine.
* '''Disease Analyser''' - Putting a sufficiently grown virus dish in here will analyse the virus and display the symptoms on a piece of paper and on examining the virus dish. Also allows the Disease Splicer to show what the symptoms you're splicing are. This will also add a virus to the virus database, allowing it to be named and detected by a medical scanner.
* '''Disease Splicer''' - Each virus has four GNA strands which control which symptoms it causes, and one race strand, which controls who can be affected by the virus. This splicer can isolate one of those strains and store it. This destroys the dish in the process however. You can then save the strand to a disk and transfer it to a different virus dish. This is your best friend while you do your job. Not only can this bad boy tell you what is in a blood sample. It can also duplicate any virus in that sample for further research. During the start of the shift, it will automatically print a list of the current virology goals.
You can do the following with the machine
* See the statistics of a virus that is put into the machine.
* Make a new virus culture for later use (Use this when making advanced viruses)
* Make vaccines using blood from a patient that was cured from a virus prior.
* Name an advanced virus if it is not named yet
* Print a release form for named viruses

=Curing A Virus=
So you are tasked with curing a virus that is harming the station's inhabitants? Well you are just a few steps away from being the unsung hero!


==== Requirements ====
==Curing The First Infected==
First priority is finding the crewmember who is infected and getting them to medbay into isolation as fast as possible. It is easier to cure a singular person compared to curing a whole station.
A virus will not show up on the [[Medical Items#Medical_HUD|Medical HUD]] when the virus is in its early stages. You will need to use the [[Medical Items#Health_Analyzer|Health Analyzer]] to find viruses still in their early stages.
Once you have the infected you will want to get the cure in them as soon as possible. Once they're cured, you will have to take a blood sample for the next step.


* Virus Dish
==Getting The Vaccine==
:: Virology starts with three of these in the freezer, more can be found obtained from a Virus Crate.
Once you have the blood of a cured subject you can start mass producing the cure. To do this you will need the [[#PanD.E.M.I.C 2200|PanD.E.M.I.C 2200]].

# Click on the create vaccine button next to the virus you want to make the vaccine for. If the blood contains multiple antibodies to different viruses you will have more than one option.
* Virus Food
# Repeat till you have enough vaccine.
:: There is a Virus Food dispenser on the wall next to the Pathogen Incubator
# Bring the bottles to the [[Chemist]]s so they can pill the vaccine into pills. Make sure that they call it a suiting name else it might get lost in a pile of pills without people knowing what it actually cures.

A vaccine is spread just like a virus. So you can just take a sip from the bottle to cure yourself.


* If the Pathogen Incubator has any radiation in it, flush the system to remove it.
==Spreading The Vaccine==
* [[File:Beaker.png]] Fill the beaker with Virus Food.
Curing the infected will be easy once you have the vaccine. A single dose of, for example, 0.1 units will cure anybody and will make non-infected immune to the virus. However, the dosage amount does not matter, so you can use more or less than 0.1 units if you wish to. Be sure to get everybody cured otherwise [[Death squad|bad]] things can happen.
* Place the Virus Food beaker into the Pathogen Incubator.
* Insert the Virus Dish into the Pathogen Incubator
* Turn on the Pathogen Incubator.
* Once "Sufficient viral growth density achieved" you can eject the dish.


==Stealth Viruses==
An important thing to note about viruses with a high <i>Stealth</i> attribute:
* Any virus with a Stealth attribute of <b>2</b> or greater will be hidden from [[File:Healthhud.png|32px]][[Medical Items#Medical_HUD|Medical HUDs]], [[File:Health Analyzer.gif|32px]][[Medical Items#Health_Analyzer|Health Analyzer]] (this includes Advanced Health Analyzers) and [[file:Bscanner.gif|32px]] [[Medical Items|Advanced Body Scanners]].
* Any virus with a Stealth attribute of <b>3</b> or greater will be hidden from the [[File:Pandemic.png|32px]][[#PanD.E.M.I.C 2200|PanD.E.M.I.C 2200]].


=== Mutating a pathogen (virus) sample ===
This means that if a crewmember comes to you showing or telling you they are showing/experiencing symptoms and your [[File:Pandemic.png|32px]][[#PanD.E.M.I.C 2200|PanD.E.M.I.C 2200]] is telling you there is <b><i>No disease detected in provided blood sample</i></b>, that it's possible you are dealing with a really stealthy virus.


This is how mutate a pathogen (virus) on a dish to change either a symptom, the affected race, or the contagion type, and is decided completely randomly.
===Combating a Stealth Virus===
Trying to defeat a virus with a high Stealth attribute (hence a "stealth virus") can be difficult, but the methodology to cure it can be simple.


==== Requirements ====
Note: If you aren’t wearing your bio-suit, you should put it on as soon as possible and get an oxygen tank (but you would never NOT wear your bio-suit and internals, right? RIGHT?!)


* Virus Dish
The first thing you want to do is to isolate the crew member in a patient room in the Virology wing of Medbay. Next, notify the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) that there is a possible stealth virus on the ship. If there is no CMO, notify the Captain as soon as possible. You may want to ask a doctor to fully suit up as well and begin interviewing the patient (who they were in contact with, where they were, what were they doing, etc.)

* Access to a working Pathogen Incubator


==== Helpful Optionals ====
Next, you are going to want to get a large sample of symptomatic blood by getting the following:
* A clean, sterile beaker
* A syringe with 5u of the infected crew member's blood
* A blood bag (any type)
Place 40u from the blood bag into the clean, sterile beaker and add in the infected member’s blood. You can add an additional 5u of blood from the blood bag to completely fill the beaker. Next, place the syringe that contained the symptomatic blood in the [[File:Pandemic.png|32px]][[#PanD.E.M.I.C 2200|PanD.E.M.I.C 2200]] and <b>Destroy</b> the blood sample. You can then eject and dispose of the syringe. This should give you at least 45u of blood without putting the patient in additional danger by drawing too much blood.


* Access to a working Disease Analyzer.
Methodology 1: If you have isolated strains of virus that have a very low stealth attribute (for example, <b>Choking</b>), you can attempt to splice that symptom into the stealth virus strain by taking 1u of the symptomatic blood and putting it in a clean beaker with 1u of the strain that has the low stealth value (-3 is the lowest stealth attribute). This <i>should</i> splice the two together and hopefully get a strain that you can see in the [[File:Pandemic.png|32px]][[#PanD.E.M.I.C 2200|PanD.E.M.I.C 2200]]. However, if the stealth virus has more than 4 attributes, the additional strain may overwrite one of the underlying symptoms, which is not ideal. This may need to be repeated multiple times.


==== Process ====
Methodology 2: This starts the same as Methodology 1, but instead of splicing in other viral strains, you are going to use [[Guide to Chemistry#Diphenhydramine|Diphenhydramine]] to remove one symptom at a time until you are left with multiple strains that have a stealth attribute lower than 3 so it can be analyzed by the [[File:Pandemic.png|32px]][[#PanD.E.M.I.C 2200|PanD.E.M.I.C 2200]] . This may need to be repeated multiple times to get the full symptom list, as [[Guide to Chemistry#Diphenhydramine|Diphenhydramine]] removes one symptom at random.


* Insert the Virus Dish into the Pathogenic Incubator.
With your Chief Medical Officer's approval, you could attempt to intervene by injecting a patient with a known virus with the <i>Anti-Bodies Metabolism</i> trait. This may help combat the stealth virus.
:: Virus food is not required.
* Insert the Virus Dish into the Pathogen Incubator
* Add radiation to the Pathogen Incubator, ensuring that the radiation meter turns red.
:: 1,000,000 µSv minimum is recommended as it quickly runs out.
* Turn on the Pathogen Incubator.
* Once "Mutant Viral Strain Detected", one of the parts of the sample has mutated.
:: If you are mutating two samples at once, the way to tell which mutated is the infection rate will read "Unknown" on the Pathogenic Incubator's interface.
* Eject the sample and place it into the Disease Analyser to see what has mutated, check it against the previous Disease Analyser report.


Once you have compiled the full list of symptoms, you can then determine the cure.

An advanced virus works a bit different compared to a "normal" virus. The most significant differences are.
* You can only have one advanced virus per person
* You can mutate advanced viruses using chemicals
* You can combine advanced viruses


* Infected person
An advanced virus can have up to 6 symptoms. You do this by mixing two virus samples. By the powers of RNG, you can get the desired outcome.<br>
* Radium
A virus has statistics that all symptoms will influence, and some symptoms will be more effective with certain stats.
* Vial
Every symptom has these stats which have the following effect.
* Syringe
* Stealth, if the virus is visible to scanners or other devices
* Beaker
* Resistance, how hard it is to cure the virus
* Access to a working Isolation Centrifuge
* Stage Speed, how fast the virus will reach its final stage making it act faster
* Transmittable, what the virus uses to spread to other victims
* Level, this is the level of the symptom. You will need different chemicals to generate symptoms with different levels. For example, the "Toxic Filter" symptom requires a chemical capable of generating level 6 symptoms.
Every symptom added will influence the statistics of the virus.
Having more symptoms will lower the Transmittable and Resistance statistic. Thus having more symptoms is not always better in some cases. See [[#Understanding Stats|Understanding Stats]] for more info.

So you think you are ready to make a virus that can benefit the crew?
Before you start ensure that you have thought of a set of symptoms you want the virus to have. Once you have the symptoms you can begin.
The general method to get a symptom goes as follows.
# Get a virus sample in a beaker. Use the [[Medical Items#Dropper|Dropper or pipette]] for this.
# Add 1 unit of the chemical you need for the symptom to the beaker. This makes the virus mutate a new random symptom.
# Put the sample in the [[#PanD.E.M.I.C 2200|PanD.E.M.I.C 2200]] and see if you got the symptom you need. If so make a new culture. Naming your cultures accordingly will help you long term.
# Optional, remove the unwanted symptom using [[Guide to Chemistry#Diphenhydramine|Diphenhydramine]].


* Antibody Scanner
Doing this for each symptom in one virus sample will lead to a virus with a maximum of 5 symptoms, after the 4th symptom it will not be certain if the 5th will be generated or will replace an existing one. If you want to get the maximum out of your virus you can make two different virus samples with a combined symptom number of 6 and combine those till the result has all 6 symptoms.

Once you have your new designer virus you should get it approved by the [[Chief Medical Officer|CMO (Chief Medical Officer)]] as per [[Standard Operating Procedure (Medical)#Virologist|Standard Operation Procedure]]. The [[#PanD.E.M.I.C 2200|PanD.E.M.I.C 2200]] can make a form for you once you name the virus using the machine.
A virus that spreads should be approved by the captain and vaccines should be prepared prior to releasing for crew that does not want to be infected by the virus.

So you got the approval of your superior? Perfect!
:: If the infected individual has not formed antibodies, then wait longer.
Now it is time to yell at the [[Chemist]]s once more. They will be able to put the virus samples you made into pills.  
:: Take care to give them antitoxins if they are in danger of dying.  Radium is lethal! Only a living patient may form antibodies.
Be sure to remind them to name the virus! Else it will be called "Blood (1u)" which on its own is not that appealing.
* [[File:Syringes.png]] Once the patient has antibodies, take a sample of their blood with a Syringe.
* Inject the antibody filled blood into a vial, all 15 units.

* Insert the blood filled vial into the Isolation Centrifuge.
* Choose the antigen you require to be isolated.  Most of the time there will only be one option here.
:: This is a good time to cure the infected of their radium poisoning with anti-toxin.
* Once completed, you will have a vial filled with blue antigen (antibodies).

Every shift Central Command will request for 3 different viruses to be created by you. One virus will require a specific level of a given property and a specific symptom, one will require 4 specific symptoms and to be non-stealth, while one will require 4 specific symptoms and to be stealthy. The viruses must be delivered via the cargo shuttle and there must be at least 15 units of infected blood loaded on for the goal to be completed. Delivering each virus will send 200 credits to the medical departmental account and a one time 200 credit reward to you if you deliver two of them in a shift. The current goals can be checked at a [[Medical_Items#Medical_Record_Console|Medical Record Console]].

After you are done mixing your disease, stats from the symptoms are added together to make disease stats. Here is what exactly they do:

* Transmission is determined as follows: (disease's transmission - the amount of symptoms). 2 or less is blood, 3-5 is contact (3 is by feet, 4 is by hands and 5 is touch in general), 6 or more is airborne. However, sneezing will allow the virus to spread airborne once it reaches stage 4.
* Once the victim's symptoms have subsided, they are cured.
* Chance of advancing a stage per tick is 2% or stage speed, whichever is higher.
* Cure depends on resistance and amount of symptoms: resistance - (amount of symptoms / 2)

:: If the Virus Food vendor is out, Chemistry can mix some.
* Ensure there is no radiation in the Pathogenic Incubator, at least 30 units of Virus food, then turn it on.
:: If there is radiation in the system, flush the system before putting in the virus food.
* Once the incubation is finished, the machine will ping "Sufficient viral growth density achieved.".  Eject the virus dish from the Incubator.
* Insert the fully cultivated dish into the Disease Analyser.
* After a short wait, the virus dish will be ejected, along with a piece of paper listing the symptoms.

=== Splicing ===
To understand splicing, you must know that every virus has 4 GNA strands. Each strand has a respective symptom related to it, in varying degrees of severity, 4 being the lowest, and first symptom to manifest, and 1 being the highest, and final symptom to manifest. The disease splicer allows you to replace GNA strands with other GNA strands of the same level.
The disease splicer has three functions, which allow you to modify viruses, allowing you to define which GNA strands they have. The first of these functions is utilising the splicing function, to copy a GNA strand from an inserted virus tray to the disease splicer buffer. This is done by selecting the desired GNA strand. Doing so will destroy the virus tray in the process, so be aware of this fact.
The disease splicer’s second function is to copy whatever strand it has stored in its buffer, to a disk. These disks can be inserted into the disease splicer, uploading their respective strand to its buffer immediately, and unlike in the case of virus trays, disks will remain intact upon uploading their strand.
The final function of the disease splicer is to apply the strand stored within its buffer, to a virus, replacing the current strand on the respective level of the buffer’s strand’s level. This is done by selecting the strand located in the buffer.
With these functions in mind, the process in order for you to develop your own virus follows these steps:
* Firstly, you must obtain a disk for each strand level that you wish to apply to a virus. This is where the incubator’s irradiating functions prove useful, as you can potentially generate every GNA strand you want, by mutating a base virus.
* Secondly you must obtain a virus upon which you will apply your desired GNA strands. It does not matter what the original strands are, as you will be overwriting them with your desired strands.
* Finally you must insert this dish into the splicer, and splice each strand from your disks, by uploading them to the buffer one at a time, and splicing them over the disease.
Once you have your final product, you can use the Cure Research Machine to create a beaker of blood containing the virus.

Medical Department


So you want to be a Virologist, creator of a beneficial virus? Or just want to cure viruses that plague the station? Then this is the guide for you! Here you will learn how to make viruses and how to cure them.

Virology

Virology is sealed from the rest of the station. You are not on the disposals network, nor do you share the same atmos system.

Virology 101

If you are a Virologist for the first time, read this part very carefully!

Viruses

Every virus behaves differently, from created viruses to event spawned viruses. Most viruses can spread themselves to other humanoids near the host in one way or another. These types of spread are:

  • Airborne - The most dangerous and quick spreading, if you are anywhere within the breathing area of the infected crew member, you have a chance to be infected. Wearing internals stops further infections.
  • Direct Contact - Requires you to touch, been touched, or be extremely close to the source of the infection. The infection will be spread by the skin and bodily fluids of an infected person, but will not survive long in the air. Wearing protective clothing and avoiding infected are great ways of not getting infected yourself.
  • Blood - The infection will be spread by blood from the infected person. Beneficial viruses usually fall under this category.
  • Special - The disease is not normally contagious and the affected crewman has been infected by a non-human vector source. You can work with the infected without risk yourself unless they expose you to the same vector source that infected them.

All viruses that spread with blood or above mentioned transfer by giving humanoids an infected blood sample using either a syringe, a pill or other types of food/drinks or by using the virologists agent item Viral Injector. Smoke grenades or syringe guns will not work. Every virus or vaccine only requires any amount of units to infect or cure somebody, 0.1 unit will work.

Each virus will not be visible on the Medical HUD till they reach a later stage, meaning at least at the halfway point of the stages (rounded up). For example, the Brainrot virus has 4 stages. The virus will then be visible starting at the 2nd stage. Any advanced virus has 5 stages total and it can be visible on the HUD starting at the 3rd stage depending on the stealth stat (see Advanced Diseases for more information).

Each virus also has their own chemical(s) that the infected needs to ingest for them to be cured. See Infection Listings for the cures for the known viruses. The virus has a chance to be cured once the infected humanoid has the chemical(s) in their body. Once the victim is cured, they will be immune for that virus till they get cloned or put in another body. A good idea is to get a blood sample of the person you cured to make a vaccine. See Curing A Virus for more details.

Should a virus start spreading on the station (or should you work on something nasty and use the monkeys for it), you have to keep your workplace sterile and yourself safe. For this, you will find these useful:

Pandemic.pngPanD.E.M.I.C 2200

This is your best friend while you do your job. Not only can this bad boy tell you what is in a blood sample. It can also duplicate any virus in that sample for further research. During the start of the shift, it will automatically print a list of the current virology goals. You can do the following with the machine

  • See the statistics of a virus that is put into the machine.
  • Make a new virus culture for later use (Use this when making advanced viruses)
  • Make vaccines using blood from a patient that was cured from a virus prior.
  • Name an advanced virus if it is not named yet
  • Print a release form for named viruses

Curing A Virus

So you are tasked with curing a virus that is harming the station's inhabitants? Well you are just a few steps away from being the unsung hero!

Curing The First Infected

First priority is finding the crewmember who is infected and getting them to medbay into isolation as fast as possible. It is easier to cure a singular person compared to curing a whole station. A virus will not show up on the Medical HUD when the virus is in its early stages. You will need to use the Health Analyzer to find viruses still in their early stages. Once you have the infected you will want to get the cure in them as soon as possible. Once they're cured, you will have to take a blood sample for the next step.

Getting The Vaccine

Once you have the blood of a cured subject you can start mass producing the cure. To do this you will need the PanD.E.M.I.C 2200.

  1. Put the blood in the PanD.E.M.I.C 2200. A syringe can be put into the machine
  2. Click on the create vaccine button next to the virus you want to make the vaccine for. If the blood contains multiple antibodies to different viruses you will have more than one option.
  3. Repeat till you have enough vaccine.
  4. Bring the bottles to the Chemists so they can pill the vaccine into pills. Make sure that they call it a suiting name else it might get lost in a pile of pills without people knowing what it actually cures.

A vaccine is spread just like a virus. So you can just take a sip from the bottle to cure yourself.

Spreading The Vaccine

Curing the infected will be easy once you have the vaccine. A single dose of, for example, 0.1 units will cure anybody and will make non-infected immune to the virus. However, the dosage amount does not matter, so you can use more or less than 0.1 units if you wish to. Be sure to get everybody cured otherwise bad things can happen.

Stealth Viruses

An important thing to note about viruses with a high Stealth attribute:

This means that if a crewmember comes to you showing or telling you they are showing/experiencing symptoms and your Pandemic.pngPanD.E.M.I.C 2200 is telling you there is No disease detected in provided blood sample, that it's possible you are dealing with a really stealthy virus.

Combating a Stealth Virus

Trying to defeat a virus with a high Stealth attribute (hence a "stealth virus") can be difficult, but the methodology to cure it can be simple.

Note: If you aren’t wearing your bio-suit, you should put it on as soon as possible and get an oxygen tank (but you would never NOT wear your bio-suit and internals, right? RIGHT?!)

The first thing you want to do is to isolate the crew member in a patient room in the Virology wing of Medbay. Next, notify the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) that there is a possible stealth virus on the ship. If there is no CMO, notify the Captain as soon as possible. You may want to ask a doctor to fully suit up as well and begin interviewing the patient (who they were in contact with, where they were, what were they doing, etc.)

Next, you are going to want to get a large sample of symptomatic blood by getting the following:

  • A clean, sterile beaker
  • A syringe with 5u of the infected crew member's blood
  • A blood bag (any type)

Place 40u from the blood bag into the clean, sterile beaker and add in the infected member’s blood. You can add an additional 5u of blood from the blood bag to completely fill the beaker. Next, place the syringe that contained the symptomatic blood in the Pandemic.pngPanD.E.M.I.C 2200 and Destroy the blood sample. You can then eject and dispose of the syringe. This should give you at least 45u of blood without putting the patient in additional danger by drawing too much blood.

Methodology 1: If you have isolated strains of virus that have a very low stealth attribute (for example, Choking), you can attempt to splice that symptom into the stealth virus strain by taking 1u of the symptomatic blood and putting it in a clean beaker with 1u of the strain that has the low stealth value (-3 is the lowest stealth attribute). This should splice the two together and hopefully get a strain that you can see in the Pandemic.pngPanD.E.M.I.C 2200. However, if the stealth virus has more than 4 attributes, the additional strain may overwrite one of the underlying symptoms, which is not ideal. This may need to be repeated multiple times.

Methodology 2: This starts the same as Methodology 1, but instead of splicing in other viral strains, you are going to use Diphenhydramine to remove one symptom at a time until you are left with multiple strains that have a stealth attribute lower than 3 so it can be analyzed by the Pandemic.pngPanD.E.M.I.C 2200 . This may need to be repeated multiple times to get the full symptom list, as Diphenhydramine removes one symptom at random.

With your Chief Medical Officer's approval, you could attempt to intervene by injecting a patient with a known virus with the Anti-Bodies Metabolism trait. This may help combat the stealth virus.

Once you have compiled the full list of symptoms, you can then determine the cure.

Infection Listings

Thankfully, humanity has managed to cure and eliminate almost all of the diseases that plagued its infancy. However, the vast reaches of space have been found to harbor new illnesses that can affect the unprepared staff on Nanotrasen research stations.

Cold XY-rhinovirus Still around since the dawn of man, this disease is relativity harmless, causing fatigue and a runny nose. Will progress to the Flu when untreated. Airborne Spaceacillin X
Cold9 ICE9-rhinovirus A rare disease that will progressively lower the victim's body temperature in addition to respiratory symptoms such as sneezing and coughing. Contact Spaceacillin X
Flu (A) H13N1 Flu Virion A weakened version of the flu that will cause the victim to have a nasty cough. This is an advanced disease. Blood Orange Juice
Flu H13N1 Flu Virion A common illness which causes fatigue, high fever, and muscle aches. Rarely fatal but quickly spread and will cause minor toxin and organ damage. Having an affected patient rest can slow the progress of this virus. Airborne Spaceacillin X
Food Poisoning Salmonella This illness is most commonly contracted by eating poorly prepared food and will cause weakness, stomach aches, and vomiting. This sickness will eventually pass on its own without a cure but can be more quickly fixed with either chicken soup or bed rest. Not Contagious Chicken Soup or sleeping X
Fungal Tuberculosis Fungal Tubercle Bacillus Cosmosis A rare highly transmittable virulent virus. Few samples exist, rumoured to be carefully grown and cultured by clandestine bio-weapon specialists. "GBS" Gravitokinetic Bipotential SADS- A virus which has evolved to mimic the deadly GBS virus. Unlike the actual gibbing virus however, this virus causes no damage and will never be fatal to the host. Contact Diphenhydramine & Sulfur

Grave Fever Grave Dust A unique disease linked to the entities known as vampires. This disease will cause progressively more severe amounts of toxin damage, weakness, and oxygen deprivation as it progresses. Not Contagious Spaceacillin X
Jungle Fever Kongey Vibrion M-909 One of the most feared diseases in the galaxy. Carried by primates. A single bite or scratch is enough to fully infect a human. Causes spontaneous genetic reversion, and the affected individual will also become a monkey. Special Bananas X
Kingstons Syndrome Nya Virus A relative fast spreading virus which makes subjects act like feline at earlier stages. At the last stage it will transform a Tajaran. The victim will continue to have innate feline issues like coughing up hairballs after transforming. Airborne Milk X
Lycancoughy Excess Snuggles A fast spreading virus which makes subjects cough, and experience unexplained cravings for meat at earlier stages. At the last stage patients, will start regurgitating canines and start taking brute damage all over the body rapidly. Quite lethal. Contact Ethanol or Alcohol
Magnitis Fukkos Miracos An infection of magnetic bacteria that build up in the body. As the disease progresses any metallic items not bolted down near the infected person will be pulled toward them, even objects as large as canisters. Ingested iron will draw the bacteria to it and allow them to be excreted normally. Airborne Iron
Non-Contagious GBS Gibbis A weaponized version of the GBS virus used by enemies of the corporation in assassination plots. The symptoms are identical to the more naturally occurring GBS virus. Not Contagious Cryoxadone X
Pierrot's Throat H0NI<42 Virus A brain disease that damages the basal ganglia, victims will have an uncontrollable urge to HONK. Airborne Bananas
Retrovirus Unknown This virus causes minor paralysis and odd sensations in the host during its early stages. Once sufficiently matured, the virus scrambles the hosts genetic data which can lead to horrible mutations. Sufficient amounts of bedrest also hold the potential to cure this disease. Rhumba Beat Unknown A truely horrifying virus which causes the host to be compelled to rhythmically Rhumba before exploding violently. This virus seems to be a derivative of the feared GBS virus but with more dancing involved. Contact Plasma X
Robotic Transformation R2D2 Nanomachines A rare infection caused by nanomachines in certain foods, effectively kills the infected as their body becomes metallic and their skin sloughs off before turning them into a cyborg. Not Contagious Copper X
Severe Anxiety Excess Lepidopticides A mysterious disease which causes confusion and jitteriness. When fully matured, this virus casues the host to cough up butterflies. Contact Ethanol or Alcohol
Spanish Inquisition Flu 1nqu1s1t10n Flu Virion A rare and deadly form of flu that causes an incredibly high fever. Those infected will die of internal organ burns without treatment or religious absolution. Airborne Spaceacillin
Space Kuru Prions An incredibly dangerous and often weaponized virus. Prions are found in food containing brains or in specialized bottles of poison used by enemies of Nanotrasen. The virus causes uncontrollable laughter, convulsions and will eventually kill the host. Not Contagious Incurable X
Xenomorph Transformation Rip-LEY Alien Microbes A rare infection caused by xeno-microbes in certain foods, changing the infected's DNA to that of a xenomorph hunter. Symptoms include severe pain and progressive insanity. Special Spaceacillin & Glycerol X
Wizarditis Rincewindus Vulgaris A rare illness, causes spontaneous robe growth, randomly speaking incantations, and finally random teleportation. Airborne The Manly Dorf X

Creating A Virus

You will be spending most of your time doing this part. Either for good or for worse.

Advanced Diseases

An advanced virus works a bit different compared to a "normal" virus. The most significant differences are.

  • You can only have one advanced virus per person
  • You can mutate advanced viruses using chemicals
  • You can combine advanced viruses

An advanced virus can have up to 6 symptoms. You do this by mixing two virus samples. By the powers of RNG, you can get the desired outcome.
A virus has statistics that all symptoms will influence, and some symptoms will be more effective with certain stats. Every symptom has these stats which have the following effect.

  • Stealth, if the virus is visible to scanners or other devices
  • Resistance, how hard it is to cure the virus
  • Stage Speed, how fast the virus will reach its final stage making it act faster
  • Transmittable, what the virus uses to spread to other victims
  • Level, this is the level of the symptom. You will need different chemicals to generate symptoms with different levels. For example, the "Toxic Filter" symptom requires a chemical capable of generating level 6 symptoms.

Every symptom added will influence the statistics of the virus. Having more symptoms will lower the Transmittable and Resistance statistic. Thus having more symptoms is not always better in some cases. See Understanding Stats for more info.

Engineering The Perfect Virus

So you think you are ready to make a virus that can benefit the crew? Before you start ensure that you have thought of a set of symptoms you want the virus to have. Once you have the symptoms you can begin. The general method to get a symptom goes as follows.

  1. Get a virus sample in a beaker. Use the Dropper or pipette for this.
  2. Add 1 unit of the chemical you need for the symptom to the beaker. This makes the virus mutate a new random symptom.
  3. Put the sample in the PanD.E.M.I.C 2200 and see if you got the symptom you need. If so make a new culture. Naming your cultures accordingly will help you long term.
  4. Optional, remove the unwanted symptom using Diphenhydramine.

Doing this for each symptom in one virus sample will lead to a virus with a maximum of 5 symptoms, after the 4th symptom it will not be certain if the 5th will be generated or will replace an existing one. If you want to get the maximum out of your virus you can make two different virus samples with a combined symptom number of 6 and combine those till the result has all 6 symptoms.

Paperwork

Once you have your new designer virus you should get it approved by the CMO (Chief Medical Officer) as per Standard Operation Procedure. The PanD.E.M.I.C 2200 can make a form for you once you name the virus using the machine. A virus that spreads should be approved by the captain and vaccines should be prepared prior to releasing for crew that does not want to be infected by the virus.

Releasing The Virus

So you got the approval of your superior? Perfect! Now it is time to yell at the Chemists once more. They will be able to put the virus samples you made into pills. Be sure to remind them to name the virus! Else it will be called "Blood (1u)" which on its own is not that appealing.

Viral Sample Requests

Every shift Central Command will request for 3 different viruses to be created by you. One virus will require a specific level of a given property and a specific symptom, one will require 4 specific symptoms and to be non-stealth, while one will require 4 specific symptoms and to be stealthy. The viruses must be delivered via the cargo shuttle and there must be at least 15 units of infected blood loaded on for the goal to be completed. Delivering each virus will send 200 credits to the medical departmental account and a one time 200 credit reward to you if you deliver two of them in a shift. The current goals can be checked at a Medical Record Console.

Chemicals

The chemicals listed below are used when creating an advanced virus. Spending the time to make the specialised chemicals (for example Sucrose Agar) will reward you kindly.
As stated in Advanced Diseases, each symptom has a level. The chemicals below will be able to generate symptoms with a certain level, Indicated by the level field in the table.

Understanding Stats

Every virus has a baseline for the statistics which the symptoms will add onto. Feel free to use this Nanotrasen-approved Virus Formulation Calculator to assist in synthesizing a well-crafted virus.

After you are done mixing your disease, stats from the symptoms are added together to make disease stats. Here is what exactly they do:

  • Stealth of 2 or higher will hide your disease from MedHUDs, Health Analyzers and Full Body Scanners. Stealth of 3 or higher will hide it from PanD.E.M.I.C 2200 machine.
  • Transmission is determined as follows: (disease's transmission - the amount of symptoms). 2 or less is blood, 3-5 is contact (3 is by feet, 4 is by hands and 5 is touch in general), 6 or more is airborne. However, sneezing will allow the virus to spread airborne once it reaches stage 4.
  • Chance of advancing a stage per tick is 2% or stage speed, whichever is higher.
  • Cure depends on resistance and amount of symptoms: resistance - (amount of symptoms / 2)
