Unathi and YOU
Greetings, esteemed crewmember!
In an effort to encourage inter-species cooperation and workplace efficiency, NanoTrasen has compiled a series of helpful guides on the various species that you may be working with!
(NOTE: If you are a member of the species this guide pertains to, please give it to the nearest crewmember of another species)
This particular guide refers to the species known as the Unathi (singular: Unathi).
Unathi Naming Schemes
The Unathi naming scheme is not unlike the most commonly encountered one in the galaxy. With a first name assigned without any inherent meaning and a last name denoting family or clan.
Generally, using a Unathi’s first name is reserved for close friends and family, and one should avoid mentioning it without having previously gained the Unathi’s trust.
Unathi Physiology
A typical Unathi |
Unathi are a carnivorous species of tall, scale-covered reptilian beings. While Unathi are almost always single-colored, the range of colors their scales can take is nigh-unlimited.
Unathi males normally stand at around 2 meters tall, with females around 20cm shorter. Females also tend to possess rounder snouts than males.
Unathi stand on plantigrade legs with clawed feet. While slightly uncomfortable, regular shoes fit on them well.
They also have very long, usually black-colored tongues, which may stretch up to a foot and a half long, forked just like a serpent's. In much the same manner as snakes, Unathi can sample the air around them using their tongue. As they are carnivorous species, their diet mostly consists of meat, and while they do have a tolerance to plants and fruits, they get no nutritional value from them.
Unathi are a cold-blooded species; they suffer fatigue and even short comas when exposed to extremely low temperatures. Their hearts have two valves that are spread across their chest, which makes it sound as if they have two heartbeats at once.
Language
Sinta'unathi is the tongue native to the Unathi still used today. It is widely known on Moghes and is generally the only one spoken by most of the planet’s inhabitants. It comprises mostly of hisses and guttural yelps and is extremely difficult to learn by other sentient species.
While Galactic Common doesn’t prove to be much of a challenge to Unathi, it is rarely spoken on Moghes, as many of the local tribes don’t stay in close contact with the rest of the galaxy.
The Unathi Homeworld
Moghes is a wasteland, mostly desert world, scarce in resources. Research has shown that a long time ago it was home to an entirely different ecosystem, as well as civilization, but all that ended with what many speculate to have been a nuclear conflict, as indicated by numerous irradiated territories, as well as numerous ruins found throughout the entirety of the planet. Not much is known about the previous civilizations of Moghes, as no written sources of knowledge from their period were found.
Moghes is an incredibly divided planet. While many Unathi live in more technologically advanced societies, there are numerous clans and villages which refuse contact with foreigners and live according to their old ways. With a still freshly established government Moghes is in a fairly anarchic state, but with scarce resources there is little there that can interest galactic players, mostly leaving the Unathi to themselves.
A Brief History
Moghes |
The discovery of the Unathi species was made in the year 2364, by a Skrellian exploration vessel. Reluctant to contact the primitive species, the Alliance began careful observation of Moghes, to determine the best approach. Within half a year first contact was made with numerous villages located on the planet. While some settlements reacted aggressively, leading to a few deaths of the scientists, most of the teams were well-received and managed to perform some cultural exchange.
Within ten years basic efforts funded by the Sol Government to establish a planetary government were already underway. While many tribes were extremely reluctant to join the new body, many more peaceful ones agreed to partake in creating a better home for the species.
As interest of the galaxy in the new species faded, Unathi were left to cater to themselves. The efforts of SolGov not undone, they managed to keep a basic governing body made up of around fifteen city-states ruling over about a fifth of the planet’s population.
Currently, the number is around 50% of the planet’s population, with many tribes still refusing to join the planetary government. With little natural resources and a very small population Moghes is a fairly isolated economy, making many Unathi choose to search for a better life outside of their homeworld.
Unathi Culture
In the Unathi tribes living away from the much more civilized and well-connected government many aspects of life haven’t changed in hundreds of years. Honor and strength are both important parts of the Unathi culture, often resulting in literal fights over power within the smaller tribes. Many disputes are solved through violence, often resulting in the death of one of the sides. The combat prowess of an individual is directly related to their social status.
Traditionally, in the Unathi society gender plays a very important role. The weaker females are often seen as almost property of their partners or families, generally enjoying much fewer rights than their male counterparts. Those customs, although considered tradition for the past few hundred years, are slowly being phased out, especially in government-controlled territories, where the galactic culture influences the societies into more progressive and equality-oriented mindsets.
Unathi generally don’t have any unified belief system. While it’s common to talk about ghosts and elemental beings of different kinds, it’s seldom seen for a Unathi to take them more seriously.
Present Day
With modern technology making its way into the many cities of Moghes, the species is starting to slowly catch up to the rest of the modern galaxy. With imports and exports booming at a scale not seen before on the planet, the economy of Moghes is starting to become a competitive one.
Despite the government still failing at securing support of the whole planet, the quality of life on Moghes is steadily increasing.
Remember, knowledge, respect and cooperation are the key tenets of success and productivity!
