- Wryn-Hivemind :y
- Can sense when one of their kind has died.
- Will move much faster in extreme cold environments and much slower in warm ones.
- Slight night-vision
- -20% brute damage.
- +50% alcohol tolerance.
- Will deal much less damage with punches than humans.
- cannot use human gloves or shoes due to their fragile nature and cannot wear hardsuits or soft suits either.
- cannot be healed through cryogenics or be cloned.
The Wryn (rin, plural rin) are a humanoid race possessing bee-like features. Hailing from Alveare, they possess a fragile exoskeleton made from a glass like compound giving them a strong resistance to cold and harsh winds.
Naming
In order to communicate and work with multi-species crew Wryn were forced to take on names. Wryn have tended towards using only first names, these names are generally simplistic and easy to pronounce.
Biology
Wryn are a herbivorous species, with a bodily structure very similarly resembling Terran bees. On average Wryn range anywhere between 125 cm and 165 cm and between 25 kg to 45 kg and have a life expectancy ranging from 20 to 40 years. Wryn have evolved to have a hard flexible outer shells with a similar texture to glass to protect them from the harsh winds and cold environment on Alveare. However exposing these shells to warm temperatures above 25c can cause them to start to delaminate. Their eyes are finely tuned for seeing in the dark caverns where they usually gather.
Wryn have four arms each with two digits, using two in conjunction allows them to hold and manipulate most objects. They also have three long and thin digits on their feet which act similarly to snow-shoes.
It's currently unknown why though humans have had unsuccessful attempts with cloning an adult Wryn without going through the larval stage. Thus it takes several weeks to undergo the process of bringing one back to life. However scientists have successfully transplanted what is thought to be a Wryn brain into cyborgs.
Behaviour
Wryn are extremely loyal and trusting towards their own kind, though are distrusting of others. Wryn specifically are distrusting of humans and Unathi, often they will get into verbal arguments with these species. Wryn are drawn to bright lights and shiny objects, they are known to hoard shiny objects if they are left out in the open. Wryn have never been known to use computers or machinery as they are entranced by the bright screen and flashing buttons. NanoTrasen does not openly advocate for non-human command staff, although often times Wryn are enticed with the prospect of upward mobility - there are no direct regulations that prevent this. However, such is heavily frowned on as a corporate liability and PR move. A Wryn would never be appointed Captain.
Clothing
While uniform is an important part of employee unity, Wryn are authorised to forgo the need of shoes and gloves in most cases, due to physiological differences similarly to Tajaran. Wryn should also be excused from duties which require contact with increased temperatures, due to an increased susceptibility from heat.
Language
Wryn have rarely had to communicate using their mouths, so in order to integrate with the multi-species crew they have been taught broken Sol.
An example of broken Sol: Sol can take many long hours to know good but Broken Sol can teach quicker.
Background
Culture
The Wryn are heavily rooted in family and tradition. Colonies are made up around a single queen with on average between one and eight thousand worker Wryn. Queen Wryn are practically immobile and protected heavily by the worker Wryn. To this day all contact with the Queen Wryn is made through a surrogate Wryn.
The Wryn seem to be extremely protective of their hivemind and will not tell anybody what it is like or what is said there unless it is a direct order from their queen. They seem to think of their hivemind as a sacred place just for their kind.
Home Planet
Wryn hail from Alveare, an icy mountainous wasteland. The average temperature is -34.3c with wind speeds reaching up to 204 mph.
