Humanity, originating from the Sol system, has expanded over five centuries, branching out to forge a variety of governments and powerful corporations. These range from the militaristic Trans Solar Federation, the Union of Soviet Socialist Planets, and megacorps like Nanotrasen. With a constant desire to colonize and spread their influence onto other species, they have began to develop alliances and enemies. Making human's one of the most recongnizeable and socially diverse species in the sector.
Overview
Humans are a species of endoskeletal, bipedal primates originating from Earth, a vibrant planet nestled in the Sol system. Renowned for their adaptability and ingenuity, humans have become one of the most widespread species in the Orion Sector. Venturing far beyond their homeworld, they have established a multitude of systems, giving rise to various factions and governments. Among these, the Trans-Solar Federation stands as the most formidable human-led government, rivaling their splinter group of the United Soviet Socialist Planets and contending with numerous independent entities, ranging from autonomous free port colonies to powerful megacorporations within Human space.
Humanity's presence is deeply entrenched in the Orion Sector, with individuals hailing from diverse backgrounds. Some born on distant planets, others born on space stations or colonies in the void of space. Despite this variety, a shared drive for innovation and societal growth unites them. This relentless pursuit of progress has propelled humanity to continually extend its influence across the stars and onto other species neighboring them.
However, this journey is not without its issues. Ideological divides, wars, acts of sabotage, and internal conflicts are frequent challenges that test the resilience of humanity. Yet, even amidst these struggles, humans universally acknowledge that the path to progress will always contain obstacles. It is through overcoming these challenges that humanity continues to move forward, on its path to endless progress.
Mechanics
Humans are relatively simple organisms, they have no necessary extra mechanics and act as a standard in terms of relative differences.
Biology
Human biology, intricate and diverse, is well-understood by humans, yet remains a subject of fascination for other species. Typically, humans stand between 175 cm and 185 cm, with plantigrade legs, small-nailed feet, and bodies covered in fine hair for sweat management and sensory input. Their skin spans a spectrum from dark browns to pale beiges, with coloration being hereditary.
Lifespan in humans varies greatly, influenced by environmental and living standards. High-quality healthcare and nutrition can extend life expectancy, typically up to 90 years. However, less favorable conditions may lead to shorter lifespans.
In their quest for longevity, humans have innovated through genetic enhancements and bioaugmentation, pushing their lifespan beyond natural limits and deepening their understanding of their own biology. Despite these advancements, they remain susceptible to diseases, infections, and conditions like blindness, appendicitis, and cancer, often requiring costly treatments.
Human Naming Schemes
The Human naming scheme consists of a first name, sometimes inherited from a recent ancestor, as well as a last name, denoting long-term family association.
It is generally considered rude to use a Human’s first name in professional situations, but it’s perfectly acceptable in less formal settings, even without previously making acquaintance.
Acceptable Humans names can be:
- John Smith
- Ryan "Gooseneck" Griffin
- Henry F. Bowman Jr.
Human Origin
Humanity, a widespread and diverse species, has embarked on a journey of exploration and expansion that spans over five centuries. This odyssey has given rise to a multitude of corporations, diverse ideologies, and distinct planetary environments, all contributing to the rich tapestry of human diversity.
Humans can be broadly categorized into two groups based on their place of origin: Planetborn and Spaceborn. Planetborn humans are natives of planetary environments, naturally adapted to the gravitational pull specific to their homeworlds. On the other hand, Spaceborn humans, often referred to as spacers, hail from space stations and starships, and they are more attuned to the conditions of space, which can make them find planetary gravity unfamiliar or uncomfortable.
Regardless of their origins, humans carry with them their unique cultures and languages, disseminating them across different worlds and space stations. While some maintain strong ties to their cultural identities, others have evolved or even lost their connection to these traditional roots.
Spacers
Spacer is a broad term used to describe individuals who are born and raised in artificial environments, primarily in space stations, spacecraft, and other human-made structures beyond planetary confines. While some naturally evolved space-adapted species exist, humans, thanks to technological advancements, have ventured far from their ancestral home on Earth to establish societies in the void of space.
Spacers may originate from various factions, including both the Trans-Solar Federation and the Union of Soviet Socialist Planets, or they may be independent entities not associated with either governing body. One common trait among human spacers is their inherent discomfort with planetary surfaces and their gravitational fields. They often prefer the cold expanse of the starry void in which they were raised, as their bodies are naturally adapted to zero gravity or artificially generated gravity environments. Some spacers can even suffer from Planetary Sickness, a condition that arises when they remain in a gravitational field different from their own for an extended period, resulting in uncontrollable nausea. Fortunately, these symptoms typically subside over time.
Spacer cultures are diverse and multifaceted, reflecting the vast distances that separate them from their homeworld of Earth. While some spacers may retain traces of their ancestral heritage, many have moved away from these ties over time. Instead, they tend to embrace more compact and adaptable belief systems that thrive within the societies of space stations and starships. A commonly spoken language among star born or star venturing species is known as Spacer, a dialect created to facilitate communication between individuals from various linguistic backgrounds, of different species when Gal Comm failed. Spacer serves as one of the most widely understood languages among the stars, as the humans who created it were clever enough to make it simple for speech.
Planetoids
Planetoids are self-explanatory, with most humans born on the distant colony worlds adapting to the unique gravitational environments of their respective planets. Over the course of five centuries, human civilization has flourished throughout the Trans-Solar Federation, the Union of Soviet Socialist Planets, and various independent colonies, each boasting its distinct human societies. At the heart of this diversity lies Earth, the ancestral home of humanity and the birthplace of its myriad ideologies, corporations, and species.
As humanity expands its reach into the cosmos, different planetary systems have given rise to their own cultures, often more firmly rooted than what can be achieved in the more transient and cosmopolitan environments of space stations and starships. This proliferation of distinct cultures has allowed many humans to retain or carry with them fragments of their past identities, even as they venture ever farther from Earth.
Human Governments and Bodies
Among the two places of origin, come the human based factions within the universe.
Trans-Solar Federation
The Trans Solar Federation, as it is colloquially known by its synonym, Sol Gov, is presently the largest governing body representing humanity in the cosmos. This formidable entity, characterized by its robust military presence and relentless expansion, has engaged in conflicts both against the Kidan Empire and, at times, within its own ranks to assert its dominance as the preeminent human authority in the sector.
TSF Systems
Sol System: The Sol System is the home system of the Human species within the Orion Sector. The heart of the Trans-Solar Federation and one of the busiest systems for commerce and corporations. Humans, Skrell, and other forms of alien travel throughout the system to reach the several important bodies inside. Its earliest development spans to the first century of human exploration amongst the stars, with important locations like Mars, Europa, and Pluto being colonized locations that slowly developed into important worlds for Trans-Solar Federation exploration, and the corporations rampant within.
Union of Soviet Socialist Planets
The United Soviet Socialist Planets, commonly referred to as USSP for brevity, is a breakaway human government originating in the Cygni system. Its inception followed years of simmering discontent and protests against the Trans-Solar Federation. Eventually, the USSP successfully rebelled against TSF rule and established its own militarized administration. This new government leans heavily towards socialist principles and employs espionage as a cornerstone of its operation, their primary language is Neo-Russkiya . Its power is regional, spanning several systems that form the union and governing body powerful enough to compete against the TSF.
USSP Systems
Cygni System: Considered the main body of the Union Soviet Socialist Planets, the Cygni System is the main industrial powerhouse and work horse of the greater USSP economy, holding many industrial sectors and mining colonies within its space. Once under TSF governance, Cygni would be the birthplace of radical socialist ideals that later caused the Cygni War. With Cygni III or its planet name воля becoming the staging grounds of intense guerilla warfare during the conflict. After the war and establishment of the governing body, the system would rapidly undergo development from the help of Independents and other USSP minor systems, allowing for further colonization and development within.
The Independents
The Independents, a broad classification encompassing both spacer and planetary humans with no allegiance to either the Trans-Solar Federation or the United Soviet Socialist Planets, are commonly referred to as "neutrals." Following the Cygni War, several Independent systems emerged as they seized the opportunity to rebel and assert their sovereignty. Positioned between the mounting tensions of the TSF and USSP, these systems often serve as intermediaries, engaging in trade with both major factions. Furthermore, they occasionally take on the roles of mediators and self-policing entities to address internal issues when dealing with more influential governments.
Independent Systems
- Lei-Gong System: A colonized system founded by migrants of Yangyu descendent. The original expedition into Lei-Gong only consisted of 400 explorers who would create the first biodomes of settlement along the surface of the planets inner ring moon, naming in Yuèlxing. After the Cygni War, the people of Lei-Gong would secede from the Trans-Solar Federation and become an independent body. For years the planet would undergo an ideology schism which led its populace having a large religious group taking control of direction. Lánxing continues to be the main world of the system, and as such, pilgrims from Yuèlxing to the old Earth Shrines have become a common test of faith for those living on the barren moon. The non religious find Yuèlxing to be a profitable place due to its old industrial facilities which are still active.
- Vijii System: The Vijii system is a prominently criminal system that is controlled by pirate cabals. After the Cygni War, the system went into a state of anarchy as rampant piracy caused the original governing TSF to evacuate its citizens and legal body during the conflict. This power vacuum led to pirate factions under the rule of Giovanni the Spacer, to form a United Spacer Federation, which conducted piracy in the core worlds until Giovanni's assassination's years later, and the groups shattering following its leaders demise. Vijii continues to be a dangerous area of space but has become more open to negotiations under protection fees by the pirate gangs within. The main planet of population inside Vijii is Quaras, a tropical jungle world that once used to house the governing TSF, and now contains a hub of black market traders and run-away criminals to reside.
The Corporations
Within the expansive domain of the Trans-Solar Federation, corporate entities have steadily accrued influence and power over the course of 500 years. They have adeptly negotiated a degree of sovereignty and engaged in covert practices. Particular megacorporations, such as Nanotrasen and Cybersun, exercise a quasi-authority over Independent systems, fostering cooperative relationships with the overarching governing bodies they coexist with. After The 2248 Constitutional Convention within the TSF, Corporate power has slowly been pushed further from federal space and toward independent colonies and frontier fringe sectors. This corporate agency affords them a measure of control over these systems, enabling them to shape local operations according to their preferences.
Corporate Systems
Epsilon Eridani System: Once a system under operations by the Trans-Solar Federation on behalf of the Althland Mining Company, it would later be bought out, and liquidated by Nanotrasen. Now a corporate body that works with the TSF to extract and study the system and its planets. Considered a fringe system far from the main human populations centers, it lies at a crossroad in the Orion Sector for other species. The corporation has undergone extensive construction of space stations ranging from science, to mining, and even a state of the art command hub around the anomaly of Epsilon Eridani II. A volcanic world with strange wildlife and lucrative resources that are constantly being exploited. The system is under surveillance by the corporation, and its distance and strange energy have made it a popular place of rumours and speculation.
The Frontier
The "Frontier" is less a conventional governing body and more a fundamental concept synonymous with freedom. It represents uncharted territories and lawless regions where no specific governing entity, be it human or alien, can assert control or claim governance. Those humans who hail from the Frontier are often categorized as spaceborns, born into an environment characterized by smuggling, piracy, and the relentless pursuit of uncharted worlds for potential habitation. Life on the Frontier has shaped the beliefs and cultures of its inhabitants, rendering them simple nomads whose influence extends solely over their own lives and interactions with fellow wanderers. These nomads, whether driven by peaceful intentions or driven by more malicious motives, coexist within this vast expanse, where freedom is the prevailing principle.
Social
Human Culture during its 500 years has somewhat generalized and simplified itself under governing rule. When discussing social aspects, most fall under the governing body or location humans live within.
Human Languages
Primary Languages of Human Origin are older but refined languages that humans have evolved or generalized during the centuries under TSF governance, and space expansion. These languages and their cultures are common on planets, and frequent in space from travelers, migrants, and workers aboard stations and far planets.
Primary Cultural Languages
- Sol Common: The primary language within the TSF and a linguistic bridge connecting humans across the Federation's diverse colonies. The TSF would attempt to push Sol Common as much as possible to replace older languages with something more modern. The results were mixed, and its failure to overtake languages failed; however, it did become one of the largest known languages humanity created. It serves as a practical language, notably favoured by citizens and governing officials. While sharing similarities with Tradeband, Sol Common sounds more relaxed and colloquial in tone when speaking.
- Neo-Russkiya: Derived from Old Slavic and various European dialects, Neo-Russkiya is the linguistic offspring of ancient tongues that now follow Northern Eurasian culture, particularly under the USSP government. The sheer scale of the USSP's dominion and the migration of its populace have propelled Neo-Russkiya to the forefront, making it the primary language. It sounds blunt and harsh when heard and composed of mostly consonants and vowels.
- Euro Accord: A language that draws its roots from French, Germania, and English dialects, combining the linguistic and cultural traditions of old Western Europe. With its distinctive speech patterns, Euro Accord stands as one of the most anciently evolved languages in human history, being the predecessor of the English language. It sounds nasally and very congested when spoken, but compact enough to be short and to the point.
- Iberian Mix: A dialect that emerges from the fusion of Spanish and Northern African languages. Its popularity took root in the Iberian Peninsula and Northern Africa. Over time, Iberian would gradually supersede traditional Spanish and North African languages due to its linguistic simplicity and its ability to harmoniously blend different cultural vowels. Its words tend to flow seamlessly and have a natural rhythm.
- Yangyu: A simplified version of Mandarin Chinese adapted to the Latin script, is the predominant language spoken across Asia on Earth. Its influence has extended beyond Earth's borders, making it the modern of choice for many Asian communities, both on their home planets and in space. It sounds bouncy and lively when heard, having many upward and downward audio cues within it.
Miscellaneous Languages
Secondary Languages are those formed or created outside the planet Earth. These languages are byproducts of exploration among the stars, or during the break between human based Planetoids, and Spacers as groups of human society.
Secondary Spacer Languages
- Galactic Common: A fusion of Human and Skrellian dialects, it stands as one of the most universally comprehended languages throughout the Orion Sector. It has gained immense popularity, particularly within the Trans-Solar Federation, where it serves as a common tongue understood by virtually all its inhabitants, whether they hail from the planets or the stars. Proficiency in Galactic Common has become almost mandatory for securing employment or prospects within Human or Skrell territory. Its widespread usage and long history have contributed to making Galactic Common one of the easiest and most straightforward languages to learn.
- Spacer: One of the earliest human languages devised during the pioneering days of space exploration, it was originally crafted to facilitate communication during diplomatic exchanges between the Solar-Central Compact and various alien species. Over time, it was eventually superseded by the simpler and more widespread Galactic Common, which gained prominence due to its ease of use. However, Spacer retained its popularity, particularly among spacefaring nomads, explorers, and those with a strong connection to space. It has endured as a language associated with those of Spacer heritage and remains in common use among individuals dwelling long-term on space stations and starships.
- Tradeband: With its origins dating back to Mars during the period of rapid corporate expansion into other Trans-Solar Federation colonies, particularly within Skrell space, it has earned widespread popularity among corporations and commerce enthusiasts. Originally developed to streamline the process of bargaining and negotiations, Tradeband's frequency became associated with affluent individuals. Over time, it evolved into a distinct language among the sector's aristocrats and traders, reflecting its prominent role in the realm of interstellar business and corporate prestige. It sounds posh and snappy when heard, with occasional wavy tones mixed in.
- Gutter: Originating on Pluto due to its unusual pronunciation and dissonant sounds, Gutter quickly gained notoriety as a language used primarily in seedy and criminal circles across space. Over time, it expanded far beyond Pluto's borders, becoming synonymous with nefarious activities and adding layers of complexity to covert communication. Gutter is prevalent in regions where poverty and criminality are rife, with most speakers acquiring the language through their upbringing in such environments or by associating closely with shady, often unlawful, associates.
- Clownish: The language derived from the fervent worship of the Honk Mother has its origins in an ancient circus performer from the 21st century. This performer's acts and eccentric shows captivated audiences worldwide, leading to the creation of a cult of personality around her. Over time, this following evolved into a legally recognized religious group dedicated to the teachings and gospel of the Honk Mother. Within this religious community, Clownish developed as an internal language spoken by those devoted to the arts of entertainment and the venerable traditions associated with the clown arts.
